Vintage - status of coyote with 10spd auto

Curious if you completed that BD that was going to have a coyote with the 10 speed auto transmission. Do you have any write up, pictures or impressions of the final build? I was hoping to learn more. I know Covid hit and my attention got directed elsewhere. Thanks MJJ |
We are still building it. Having to make the transmission tunnel taller for the shifter and also sourcing a different torque converter. Also working with Speedhut to make a shift indicator gauge has taken a long time.
We experienced a lot of supply issues due to Covid closures. But we are getting closer. |
I know not many automatic transmissions make it into Cobras of any type but does anyone know if there has been one with a ZF 8HP90 (this is the 8 speed automatic that comes in a Hellcat).
Just curious, it seems like that would be a nice auto in a Cobra...its a fine transmission. I waffle back and forth about manual vs. automatic when I can finally get a Cobra and am curious what different types are used besides the trusty C4, C6 or the OD in the 90's Mustang. Thanks! .chris . |
Something to consider if you are thinking of using an automatic in a Cobra;
With manual transmissions if the rear end begins to come around on you it is easy to push in the clutch and get the car under control again — if it hasn't gone too far. With an auto trans the equivalent of pushing in the clutch is putting the trans in neutral to disconnect the rear wheels from the engine. If you can't or don't, the car will minimally swap ends on you and if you were particularly egregious in your driving it could do it more than one time — just to remind you who is in control. Not to say auto's are bad, they are not. You just have to remember about the rear end coming around to say hello when you'd rather it did not. Ed |
I've used my automatic on numerous tracks including Sebring, Daytona, Roebling Road and others. I chose it because I'm too linear to be able to learn the "line" while heel-and-toe and shifting (my brother in law told me once that I'm so linear I could easily win a can't-walk-and-chew-gum contest). So I have a GO pedal, a STOP pedal and a steering wheel to manage and can learn the line much more quickly than if I had to add in the other activities.
It did take four transmissions to learn about preparing an automatic correctly for road race use: maximizing oil flow in the converter and transmission, proper cooling and finding builders who understood what I needed. After that, I have a lot of hours of smiles and more than 30K of road miles behind the car without further problems. In the right circumstances I've been able to run with newer 6-speed Corvettes and similar cars just fine. Oh, and the brakes need to be very much equal to the task too! Modern automatic transmissions are far superior in every way to standard transmission expect in the fun department of course. Will you be able to shift it manually?

I purchased my first BDR back in 2005 and sold it in 2011. This one had the manual transmission and I had a great time driving it. Now that I am older, I am over the shifting, especially sitting in traffic and working the clutch. I just purchased another BDR from Backdraft and it should be here this week. This one has the Ford SR80 6 speed auto with the electric sport mode shifter. I will let you know how it works after I put a few miles on it.

Mine has a Coyote and a 6R80 out of a 2014 Mustang. I have an electronic shifter, because at the time I built it there were no aftermarket shifters available. I have the stock Ford sport shift button mounted on the dash.
I love this transmission! I can manually control it if I want to, or let the computer do it. I have to admit, the computer shifts it much more accurately than I ever could. I did install a higher stall converter, and that made a huge improvement. It really is a joy to drive. It didn't quite fit the tunnel. There's a bump on the side of the transmission towards the rear. We had to use some fiberglass on the right rear of the tunnel to gain clearance. I also had to hand fabricate the transmission mount. Not a big deal. |
