Fuel Tank Installation Plastic to Aluminum

What is required to install the new BD aluminum tank? My plastic one started leaking at a molded radius curve. The new tank seems to mount differently from the stock plastic one. Any drilling required? I do not have access to a lift. Thx

Drilling

I installed one last year. It was a snap. Some drilling is required to mount the tank to the frame. Two bolts on each side as shown in the picture. You might want to consider replacing any rubber connections from the fill tube.

Be sure to clean that new tank out really well. Mine was filled with aluminum chips and shavings.

The Aluminum looks so much better. I couldn't even give the plastic one away for free. It went in the trash.

You definitely want to change the rubber connections! The fuel ate through mine and started leaking in a parking garage. Luckily the level wasn't too far past the bottom of the inlet, but messy none the less. I don't think "filler neck hoses" are intended to be in permanent contact with gasoline.

Thx for the feedback, Tank arrived today.

Fred, where did you get yours, how much and do you have the measurements ? Looks nice.

My plastic tank might need to be replaced, as the car has been sitting for 15 years with around 1/4 level of mixed alcohol & gas. Pew !

My BD came with a metal tank. Very thin and developed pin hole leaks, I think from rocks hitting it. I tried to repair it for about 3yrs. Last year had one made, same dimensions but heaver steel. Added another bolt and nut to support it. So far so good. When you drop your tank, you might want to cut an access hole in your trunk to get to the fuel sender and return if you add EFI, you can even do with the fuel tank in, it's easier to measure the opening for the trunk.

Sorry....just saw this.

I got mine from Iconic. I know there are some custom options out there but I figured that would be the easiest install being it's the one installed in the new cars. It mated right up.
