Hood "Rivits"

Are the hood "rivits" there for a real purpose? Do they actually attach the hood to the frame? Or are they just decorative?

I'm going to get my car repainted this winter, and I'd like to get rid of them.

They were there to keep the hood skin from peeling up on the original race cars. On replicas they are for looks only.

The original cars had sheet metal welded to the inner tubing, and the ally hood skin wrapped around that metal. To secure those together, the rivets were added.

Well, that's how I kind of do it for my replica since my fibre hood is single skin.

Actually, no welding:

With rivets

So, on our cars, they're not really serving any real function?

Bob,

On my BDR the hood has an inner reinforcing layer that is bonded around the periphery. I would assume the rivets (mine are bolts) hold it together and prevent oil canning in the center section, or maybe not. I’d PM Jay as he’d know for sure.

I see,
did you rivet the support sheet metal (alu in your case) to the inside of the tubing?

Nice!

They are decorative. Except those that hold the scoop on. They are all screws.

Thank you. I thought that was the case, but wasn't sure. I'm going to eliminate them.

Yes, riveted to frame.

Do you or anyone else have pics of one off the car? I always thought that the faux rivets were simply glued or epoxied into place. I too would like to retain them during a re-paint someday but not certain how to remove them. And are the ones on a Superformance identical? Thank you for the additional details/content.

I cannot speak for SPF, on the BDR they thread in.
