VDO Speedo went Wacko!

On my 2011 BDR build while on a Saturday afternoon cruise, I noticed that the needle on the speedo was pinned all the way to the right, past the 220 MPH mark. Never seen that before in the past 10k miles on the car. Once I turned the car off (key off) and then turned the key back to the on position, the needle corrected itself and the speedo worked fine afterwards. Can someone please explain what happened?

The problem is most likely inside the Speedo as the mag pickup is sending a PPM (pulse per mile) signal to the gauge. A short, open circuit, failure on the mag pickup or wiring to the gauge will only give a zero reading.

You may want to call VDO (# at the bottom of this setup guide)

someone has to ask...were you going 220+ mph? :)

I don't think he was really going 220 only that the needle was pinned to the far stop. He was probably only going 180.

Since it returned to normal on a restart about all you can do is monitor it.

Where is the sender for these units typically located? Again, VDO gage (0 - 220 MPH) on a 2011 BDR build.

With your combination and build era it should be in the differential.
