Is this for the BMW M3 E36 rear? I have had the same symptom on my speedo where it goes full tilt and gets pegged at the 220 MPH mark...and no, I'm not driving at that speed. :)

Is this typical of a faulty sensor? When it happened to me, I thought it was the speedo itself. Remedied the situation by turning the ignition off and then turning back on.

One thing to check is if the speedometer is wired to the sending unit in the diff or in the transmission. Your car is what I would consider an early build for us so it probably is to the differential. But take a look.

Ronnie (the original owner) would be happy to know you are enjoying the car. He passed away 5 years ago.

Mine is in the Diff but the newer ones appear to be in the xmsn that did fix my problem changed oil while i was there they say every 4 years OOps missed that mark  also note they sent new unit with no oring so order that separate. I have access to a warehouse full of ms orings so non issue for me .
