Swapping Gear Box New T56 Magnum
1 Attachment(s)
Hi there,
I'm a very happy 2015 RT3 owner.
My builder is doing some engine work on my LS2 and it's looking like we'll have to update the tranny to a T56 magnum. I'm currently running a NV3500 5 speeds.
Does anyone know if we'll have to modify the driveshaft or any other work to match the new T56 magnum? It's an LS T56 magnum.
Thanks!

The simple answer is a high probable yes.
Measure the overall length of the two transmissions from the tailshaft ending point to the bell housing surface. If they are not the same, then your driveshafts will not be the same. The other metric you need to pay attention to is the tailshaft diameter and spline count. If they are not the same, you will require a new yolk to match the output shaft diameter and spline count.

I'd think the cost of a new drive shaft and yoke, if necessary, would be well worth it for the "56" tranny. BTW, there may be an issue with the rear cross member if the new tranny is markedly longer. Just my 2¢.

I can't answer your technical questions. But I have a T56 Magnum in my Cheetah and I love the way it shifts. BTW, the drivetrain configuration in my Cheetah is such that the distance between the two U-joints on the driveshaft is about two inches.

With a driveshaft that long, Tommy, I would think you might experience some rather noticeable whipping if it were not perfectly straight and balanced. :)

I understand. I ran the numbers through a "Driveshaft Critical Speed Calculator" and it said flex shouldn't be a problem until more than 5,000,000 RPM. :D

Gotta love those 'Driveshaft Critical Speed Calculators'. What would we do without them? :) 👍

Tommy, I'm thinking you have a Chevy engine in your Cheetah so maybe that 5,000,000 RPM isn't totally out of the question. :)

It was on the Internet so I figured those guys must know what they're talking about. So that's where I set my rev limiter.
