Fletch, keep us posted when you find out why? What rear end gear are you running?

blykins 03-26-2004 05:24 AM

Went out? What do you mean? Broke?

Ron61 03-26-2004 06:23 AM

Do you have an 8.8 or 9 inch rear end. Also what kind of posi trac are you running? And of course the most, obvious, do you check the rear end occasionally to see that you have gear oil in it?

Rear end lock up is pretty rare on ANY rear end. Noisy, clunky or drive shaft turns but wheels don't is far more common.

Is this the BMW rear were talking about?

ok, I'm an idoit, its not the rear end. I got a little excited when the rear right tire locked up and though it had to be the rear end because the half shaft was fine and the brake disk was cold. Now, after talking to Reg and looking at it in the day light with the wheel off I found that the brake caliper had fallin off and jammed up the wheel. Reg is getting me the new parts ASAP so a big thanks to Reg and backdraft.

How did the caliper fall off ??????

One of the bolts work loose and the other one broke, or at least that what it looks like. Moral of the story, check all bolts from time to time.

Glad you got it fixed! Do you have the BMW rear end? How old is your Backdraft?

I have a 3.10 BMW rear end and have car #19 that I bought almost a year ago. I had it on the road for about 3 months now.

Mine too...

I had the same problem last summer with car #17. Which used to be owned by Frank Dodd.

Anyway, the car stated making a clunk, clunk, clunk sound from the left rear wheel. I pulled over took a look and could not see anything. Decided to immediately get the car home, however the wife wanted to stop at McD's for some food to take home. I pulled diagonally into a couple of parking spaces and took another look. Once again I could see nothing. The wife came out and I tried to back the car up and NO WAY... The rear end seemed to be locking up. I could not back up, however, I did not push it hard at all. I Finally got the car out of the parking space by having a guy in front of me move his car and when I started moving the clunking soud was not good at all so I called for a flat bed to come pick me up.

By the way the car had only 500 miles on it when this happened.

Upon inspection at home I found that the top bolt on the left rear caliper was missing and the bottom bolt was a quarter of the way out!!!
Further inspection revealed that both right rear caliper bolts were finger loose, the front calipers both had one bolt finger loose.

Result, I took out all bolts and put lock tight on them all. I then went on bolt patrol on the whole car to find any loose bolts.

I found the gas pedal nut on the floor with my gas pedal about to fall off.

Another day I went around a right hand corner and my door flew open!! Tried to close the door and found that the bolt that the door latch locks onto was missing. Pulled over and luckily found it on the floor.

Hopefully, this is issolated to the older cars, but I feel that the quality control still needs to be bumped up which I hope has allready happened.

Be carefull and check your bolts!!

Take care all,
Jetlaag
