mistake on VIN #

I just wanted to bring this to the attention of any other BDR owners that had build #'s close to mine. During the build phase of my BDR I was told my build # was #179 and my VIN# ended in the #s 1954. On the day I took delivery, even my SMO stated these #s.
It wasn't until a couple of weeks ago I had my head down in the engine compartment and I noticed that my VIN plate stated that I had BDR build #178 and my VIN# ended in 1953. OH OH!
I've already registered the car and received the title. I e-mailed Reg at backdraft and even sent some photos of the chassis # and VIN plate. He advised to me to sit tight but that was a week ago and have yet to hear anything else from him even after e-mailing him again.
So, if you have a BDR with a build # between 177-180, you may want to double check your VIN plate and chassis stamp. I don't know if this involves just 2 cars that may have gotten switched around during the build phase or more. Everything else with the car has been just perfect. All I have to do now is head back to the DMV and straighten out my #"s, shouldn't be to bad. Thank goodness I don't live in California:D

Wouldn't have mattered. The CHP would have assigned and affixed their own VIN tag to your front cross-member with a unique 8-digit sequence - "CA######." My Superformance build # is 747, but it didn't mean Jack to our DMV. :)

it might mean jack to an insurance company, police dept or other states, ie, in sc or wherever.....

now is the time to correct the error, not when the car is stolen.

in mich we too get a mich state assigned vin, but it is an easily removed sticker. once that is gone , removed by a perp maybe, the only thing left to id the car are the stamped mfr numbers.

i would hate to think they recovered my stolen car and i could not prove it was mine cuz the paperwork said 123 and the car said 124 or whatever. same on an insurance claim perhaps.

just another viewpoint. bill

From a law enforcement standpoint you open yourself to any over zealous, lack of common sense, rookie cop that does not care if it is your mistake or the manufacturer's mistake, he is towing/impounding the car till "you" prove ownership. (which you will be responsible for all expenses). Believe me, as a 29+ year law enforcement officer I can attest to the fact that there "ARE" officers out there that work this way. I hate to admit they are in the same line of work but some of the guys out there think once they strap on the "Badge", they are "Gods".

"GET IT FIXED, NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!" Please!!!!!!!!

I'm heading to the DMV to correct the issue at lunch time today. I'm just wondering if the individual that originally thought that he had build #178 and my vin # knows that his #'s are off and same for the guys after my #'s.

All is well with the VIN #'s. Reg, from Backdraft called to let me know it was just a clerical error between my car and another car that he fortunately still had in his warehouse. He quickly sent me a new SMO to set things right with the DMV.
Its great knowing that Reg is quick to handle any problems that may arise!

Same thing happened to me on build 128. My problem was taken care of promptly cause I was going for inspection that next week! I wish my other problems were taken care of so easily.
Also the CHP here in CA did give a you-know-what cause Backdraft uses a 14 digit number and they used that number rather that attaching a new VIN. Much neater.
