Paint codes and make and model years
I have the need to purchase some tutch up paint. My problem is that at the auto supply stores, the colors are not listed by code ,but by year make and model of car.
I was told that Indigo blue is a G. M. color does anyone know the year, and make that offered it. |
One quick way is to do an eBay search for a late model car with that paint name. In this case I found a 2002 Chevy Suburban:

Tony,
My vin plate lists all the paint codes. That's not my problem. The auto supply stores that carry small bottles of touch up paint, don't list by paint codes. All they want to know is the make, year and model of the car. Since Reg had said "indigo blue" is a G.M color, I just need to know the year and make i.e. Chev or Oldsmobile etc. |
Tony
You have an email. Jaybar, Have fouind the touch up paint can be a little out. Test first.. Bernie |
You could try the Auto Color Library... You can search the GM colors by year but (unfortunatly) not by name. It may time consuming but... :(
I quickly checked 2000, 1995, and 1990. There is an 'Indigo Met' in 2000. If yours is metallic check it out. Auto Color Library -John |
Thanks to all that replied, I have the info I need and infact did just order the touch up paint.
FYI Indigo blue is a GM paint 2000-2004 code NGGM506 |
Tony, I'm having... a little communication problem with BackDraft.
My paint and body guy says that Indigo Blue is a PPG "Global" color, and that he can order the paint, but he needs the code(s). Where am I in this ??? He's already started the body work for the complete repaint. Yeah, look at my pictures, barbed wire does a number on a paint job. Front to back, top to bottom. Boudy's on the sidelines, bless him, and Reg is kinda hard to snag. Suggestions? We are all friendly on this project if I could just CONNECT with somebody! Thanks, Tony. UT |
I have heard the same thing about the PPG paint codes listed on our VIN plates being "global" or international codes. The problem is that most U.S. paint retailers have no way to convert these codes.

Since you offered, and since no good deed goes unpunished: I have BDR #168 (titanium with black stripes) and need a little touch up paint, both colors. If you could send the same type of info as you did for UT, I'd sure appreciate it. Thank you!! Bill |
JayB,
The forumula that Tony posted is your best method to ensure a proper match. Any real paint shop will be able to mix that. |
Hey Tony,
You helped me and you didn't even know it. later Dennis |
JayBar,
The "global" you are talking about is an actual PPG line of paint. It is really PPG Global. Yes it is/was sold in the international market before it came to America. If you find a PPG "Platinum Dealer" they should be able to get the American version (i.e. quarts and gallons vs liters) formulas for you. Or if it is done by grams, it may not matter. Look in the yellow pages under "auto paint stores/retailers" and find a PPG dealer listed as Platinum. I don't know where Jupiter Florida is, but if you are near any big city there should be a Platinum dealer. If all else fails, contact me as I have a PPG Platinum dealer near me, who could possibly help. I believe Backdraft has changed paint lines for higher number cars (not sure when they started) and are now using Akzo-Sikkens brand. Super paint, and not cheap! But, neither was Global! Whoops, I just read Tony Martins response. He may have the answer for you, and hopefully you can buy that paint near where you live. You will still need and automotive PPG dealer to mix it for you, or a PPG bodyshop with a PPG mix system. |
