Which gearing is better for a BDR, TKO 500 or 600

My engine will have 450 ft-lbs of torque so a TKO 500 should handle that. My question is, from a gearing stand point, which tranny is better for street applications. 1st gear is diffent on the 2 tranny's and the TKO 600 has a choice of two 5th gears.

Go with the tko road race gears of 2.8 in first and .82 in fith. I would spend the extra money on the 600.

The best gearing for your car is a function of the HP and torque curves from the engine, the rearend ratio, wheel size and type of driving you typically do.

All said and done the most common TKO I'm seeing used (from posts here) is the 600 with the 82 5th.

yeh the tko 600 is awesome 1-4 is great for driving around town. Highway 5th gear drops the rpms down to conversation level. I might even get 12 miles to the gallon.

When I rebuilt my motor (recently) I chose the camshaft based on my typical "cruise rpm" so the motor would be at it's best at that rpm.

Of course with a 5 speed your rpm may be unusually low at cruise rpm. the delimna would be: Sacrafice high rpm horse power for good low torque at cruise rpm? Or spec the cam for FOURTH gear cruise rpm? Be careful to select a reasonably HIGH 1st gear ratio. It's pretty common for many Cobras to end up with 1st gear so low it's virtually worthless.

What are your RPM's at 70MPH in 5th gear?

I pull around 1500-1800 rpm at 70 in fifth gear. 408 with tko 600, stock rear gears. 5th is worthless unless I'm going 70, otherwise the motor lugs around too much. 80 and 5th gear is a nice ride on the highway.

Which 5th gear do you have on the TKO 600.
