How to protect front side of rear fender wells from stones?
How do you protect the paint on the front side of the fendor wells from getting chipped with stones as they are kicked up while driving. I have seen a leather bra type of piece and dome clear plaric adheared to the spot. Any thoughts?

I have seen: aluminum spats, leather spats, plastic spats, invincashield (the clear plastic), static vinyl, rock gaurd paint (like on 911's), and undercoating/bed liner and of course duct tape (along with other kinds of tape). All work, just decide on the look you want.

I was going to get mine done with LineX. They did a great job on the bed of my truck. My issue is that once it's there it may be dificult to pain around or next to impossible to remove if I ever decide to.

The 3M ClearBra material is the best, you don't see it but it does the job very well. The green car you saw on Saturday has it, I would recommend it to everyone.

My solution with CSX 3121 was to mask and spray the vulnerable section of the rear fender with Krylon flat black paint. When the inevitable dings and zits happened, I simply filled those having any depth with Bondo and resprayed. Check out the side shot of the car in my gallery, or on pages 326-7 of Automobile Quarterly Volume XIV, Number 3 (3rd quarter 1976).

Thanks. Minor details to finish but we've come a long way. Don't know if you saw the before shots...
Anyway, the 3M is a newer process atleast in the Cobra world so it may not get the reception it deserves. You can buy it and apply it yourself. The best fit is by a professional which is what you saw. Probably done for under a $100 but I'm not sure so don't hold me to it. There is no official template for the Cobra so they have to apply it and then trim it on the car. Brian was supposed to attend training for it but it fell down the list of priorities. I will likely find a local mobile installer to setup an arrangement with to do all the applications when they are requested. |
Invincashield sells the individual pieces of the Cobra kit. I was made for an ERA but the front of the rear fender kit are well oversize to accomodate different manufacturers. Not too expensive. Take a look at their website.

I have spats which a easily removable. They were made by Snakepit over in Long Island which is a SuperFormance dealership. The top clicks on with a lift-a-dot to the tonneau pin while the bottom clicks into a snap, under the chasis and the outside edge adheres under the wheel well with a long lengthwise velcro tab. |
