Is there a rev limit on a new bdr 408?
Hey there-I've been following cc for a year now and very thankful for all the advice. I just bought #299 and you guys have got me through most of my problems. My question is I have smith gauges and obviously there are no red line indicators of any sort. Is it possible to over rev?
Thanks for your help |
Yes, there will be a limit to how high the engine will rev. I'm not exactly an engine guru, but a lot of people on here are. Just give some engine specs and i'm sure someone can give you an idea of how high it can rev. Are you using an MSD ignition?

hey Glen-yes i'm using MSD. The car is three months old 400 miles with a 351/408. I've had the car up to 5000 or maybe even 6000 and there was no sound or noise of any type of rev limiter. I cant even believe it could actually rev higher. That alone scared the S**t out of me. Just wondering.

Your MSD box should have a white chip plugged into one side of it. This chip controls the rev limiter. The limit is clearly marked on the chip. Typically SBF will need to be limited to under 6500. This can vary with the quality of the components the engine was assembled with.
I use a 6000 chip with my 408. I figure that's high enough and I want the motor to last a long time. |
Which MSD do you have? The 6AL has a location for the insertion of a rev limiter module. I have my 302 set to 6200.

You will notice the rev limit by a large BANG! sound...;>
I believe most MSN ignitions have a programable rev-limiter, so you can change it to what it needs to be. The limit depends on the engine so you should talk to your engine builder. My 351/392 with MSD ignition is set for 5.5k, but I will probably increase this to 6k once the engine is run in and it has been dyno-tuned. Shaun |
milo22, check under the passenger side dash or footwell to see if they installed the MSD box there. Find the white chip and it will say 6000 or what ever, that will be your Rev Limit.
