Brake squeal
Just a question to find out if I'm getting "normal" brake squeal vs. abnormal.
I've got about 4800 miles on the car, chassis one-sixty-something, and no squeal when the brakes are cold. When they are warm, some annoying squeal with light application, none with moderate or more application. I've spent no time on the track, mostly street driving with occasional twisty roads when I can find them. The rotors all look fine and the pads look to have lots of life yet. Is this more or less normal for the pads/brakes combo? Standard suspension, 15" wheels, etc. Thx |
Is the noise from the rear? Check the backing plates on the rear disc brakes. They sometimes need some extra bending or trimming.

Thank you for the response, but been there, done that, got the t-shirt etc.. It is not the backing plate(s). Squeal is mostly coming from the fronts. Thanks, any other thoughts? Is the brake pad material such that a little squeal is to be expected? |

It is not a humm, a squeal for sure? High pitched? Any abnormal wear on the inside or outside of the rotor. The temp and light pressure part has me wondering.

Just a high-pitched brake squeal typical of hard metallic pads that I've experienced on some of my other cars with aftermarket "high performance" pads. These pads, however, are the same pads that were delivered on my BDR and have never been off the car. It is not a hum. No abnormal wear on the rotors, per my first post above. I don't get the temperature or low pressure symptoms either, that's why I was asking the question. Thank you for your help! |

Take a very rough sandpaper, 60 grit or better, and rough up the backing side (the side that goes up against the caliper). Then apply your choice of Anti-Squeal compound, put the brake assembly back together and you should not have squeaky brakes. This is from the www.bimmerworld.com web site. Bonitacobra is right. My squeel was exactly as described above. I took the pads out, sanded the back and scratched the back with a file also. Then I applied a thin film of silicone sealer to the back of the pad, let it set, put them back together again, and presto..... No more squeel. :MECOOL:

I gave it a whirl this morning, per Larry's and tfarhood's recommendations, and so far so good!
