Fuel Tank Leak

Fuel Tank Leak
I have a leak coming from the top of the fuel tank. Does anyone have the part number for the sending unit gasket on a stainless steel tank. I would like to have one before dropping the tank.

You and me both. I called Backdraft yesterday or the day before and talked to Frank. If you have VDO gauges then you should be able to find the part number on the internet. Frank/Reg/Craig might event have it. But if you have the Autometer fuel sending unit like me, you'll either have to buy a new sending unit to get the gasket, or make a new one yourself. I'm not good at making gaskets so this will be the second time I drop the tank to fix the leak.

it a simple cork gasket, no need to buy the whole sending unit with the autometer guages. Make sure you straighten the sending unit flange so it is flat. Sheet of cork gasket is $2.00, use a pair of scissor and fifteen minutes later you are done. If you really on want to seal use some "Seal ALL" any autozone will sell it. It seals gasoline,

The last owner of my car messed with the transmission - lost the gasket on a small plate on the side of the tranny --- instead of a complete gasket set, when I did a transmission service we put "seal all" on the leaking plate - a year later no leak so the stuff should work on the top of the gas tank with no problem. Never heard of "Seal All" but I'm going to go get some! Yep I've got the cork material, just need to drive the car a bit to get the fuel level way down before I drop the tank again. O darn!

Believe it or not I had a gas tank pouring a small stream out. I smeared some "Seal All" on it and 5 years later sold the car. The stuff is designed for gasoline where most sealants are not, and it is cheap.

Thanks for the advise. As soon as I run the fuel out of the tank, I'll just make as gasket for the sending unit.

The "Seals All" sounds nice. I used some blue stuff on mine from Permatex that was rated for gasoline but it was the messiest stuff on the planet.
My leak stopped, but I think my custom made gasket was too large and isolated the sending unit.
One more time......
