want to convert a 302 to a 392 stroker
OK all you BDR folks, I want more power. What all would I need to switch to a 392 stroker?
headers?...will they fit into the 302 slip fit side pipes? Motor mounts...same or new? Bellhousing? Flywheel, clutch, pressure plate? Can I use the T5? any question I missed? |
Bell housing, clutch and pressure plate should all work as well as the motor mounts. Flywheel I'm not sure about, maybe....you can use a T-5 but unless it is a WC "Z'', and they are rated only at about 425hp max, I'd opt for a different trans. Headers would be an issue I think.

Since the 392 stroker is based on a 351W which shares many common parts with the 302 it will be an easy swap. The main thing you will need is new headers since the 351W is wider and taller than the 302 although the two motors share the same cylinder heads. The different headers are necessary in order to keep your side pipes aligned in the proper position. The motor mounts should be the same. All 351Ws are balanced with a 28 oz. imbalance whereas later 302s are balanced with a 50 oz. imbalance. Therefore, the flywheels may or may not be interchangeable unless you are running an early 302 (pre '84). Standard bell housings should be the same and YES you can still use your T-5 tranny especially if you are already using the late model Mustang cable clutch setup with a 157 tooth flywheel and a 10.5" diaphragm clutch. If your flywheel is already a 28 oz. imbalance piece you can reuse it along with the clutch, bell housing, clutch fork, etc. If your present flywheel is a 50 oz. model, simply swap it for a 28 oz. one. Bolt-on pieces such as pulley sets, alternator, water pump, valve covers can all be reused. The starter should also survive the swap. Hope all this helps.

Headers, sidepipes and motor mounts are all the same on a BDR. Whether it is a 302 base motor or a 351 motor.

The issue will be the openings in the body for the sidepipes. On a 302 you cut one way and on a 351W you cut the other. That will be the problem. The 351W fits better without some spacers we use for the 302.
