Peter, CSX & AK owners manual state:
wire..At least 18s.w.g. stainless
hammer that came with AK is 3#, csx has a 5#
pliers are : reasonable quality safety wire pliers expect 35 dollars
Harbor freight has some, quality can be issue, a good tool co is best
AK manual says 300 ft # torque on knock ons or center caps

Yup. Check the backdraftboys forum for details tomorrow. I'm fixing a minor annoyance with the layout and then it's all up to you guys.

Peters44,

What determines safety wire size is the diameter of the hole it will pass through. The wire should fit the hole. Common safety wire sizes are: .020 .032 and .047. For Cobra knock offs I would think .032 would be the minimum and if .047 fits, it should be used. One other thing to keep in mind is to keep the safety as short as possible. In aviation applications, wire runs are usually kept to 6" or less between tie points. Also, a proper safety will have 6-12 twists per inch. It is important not to have the wire too tight (stressed), or too loose.

safety wire

Gun Doc,
I think you reversed your logic. The hole size should be determined by the manufacturers recommended wire size for the application. JBo

JBo,

Actually most fasteners come with holes pre-drilled. Of course, the hole size is dependant on the application of the fastener. I am sure most, if not all knock offs would come pre-drilled, therefore I stand by my statement that the wire should fit the hole.
