Top speed for backdraft with 402R

I was driving tonight and noticed that at 2000 RPM I was going 60 MPH.
At 4000 RPM I was going an even 120 MPH.
I have a backdraft with a 402R and a TKO 500 tranny.
I have only had the opportunity to get up to 130 MPH a few times but am wondering what the top speed with this setup is ? That is if anyone has actually wound theirs up at all.

There is a gear calculator that's easy to hunt up on the net. You just need to know the rear end ratio and trans type, doesn't matter that it is a Backdraft or not.

As I remember, even CS and Ken Miles had a hard time topping 160. Its the aero thing.

With that big motor you might do a little better.

Bring it out to the great white dyno and find out.

www.saltflats.com - check out the 130 and 150 clubs.

My Miata went 152, think you can top that?

This will help you get a feel for what's involved...

Remember, a Cobra is just a hair more aerodynamic than a school bus. That being said, here's a link that explores the factors involved in figuring out just what your top speed might be. http://www.mayfco.com/cobra.htm

Heres another one...

I guess if you use a linear progression then @ 10,000 rpm you would be going 300 MPH. ;)

If you try to overpower the poor aerodynamics with shear horsepower, you might tear the fiberglass body off the frame !

You just might have a point here. Reminds me of my '67 Mustang I owned back in the '70's. I had a 390 CID putting out about 335 horse from the factory. Naturally I tweaked the timing a little and put a 780 CFM Holley on it and never did know what its top end was. I was too scared! At 120 MPH I could feel the front end getting light and I still had plenty of pedal left before floor boarding it. so I'm guessing between 130 to maybe 140? I really don't know.:MECOOL:

Larry (Dr.Mayf) is a cool guy - runs a twin turbo'd "Tiger" at bonneville. Knows his stuff, too.

At 7000 rpm, you should be doing 209 mph!

Gunrack's front end starts to float at 155 (closed course, with a pro driver). I NEVER took it past 140 on the track straights, maybe I'm a woose, but it SCARED me.

I don't have the eyesight and the reflexes for this kinda stuff anymore.

I'm guessing that our late-1950's aerodynamics are like a high-aspect wing formula...

She wants to FLY!!!

A detachable airdam in the front, maybe, professional tweaking of the suspension, maybe, and (God forbid) a functional wing in the rear?

Not for me.

I will wave as you, literally, fly past.

I have a Backdraft with a ford crate motor 351W with just under 400 Horse.

Mya favorite gear 3 and 4 I go zero to 80-100 MPH in no time in 3rd gear.

4th gear at approx 4500 5200 RPM i'm reaching 125 or so. Still not even hitting the 5th gear. I could never find enough space to get the RMP up over 3800 in 5th gear and that was hoovering a about 135 MPH

So your being a 402 i'm sure will be pretty good. I havent event seen what mine can really do just yet.

I have 3.08's in the rear and .67 OD.

I don't even want to think what that works out to at 6250 rpms if wind resistance were not an issue.

All I know is that I'll never have ones big enough to find out what 230 feels like.

lovehamr 04-25-2007 12:11 PM

How fast can one go? Two words, one name; Dick Smith. Obviously 160 is no limit. It may not be much fun past that though! LOL Like you say ROUSHAC, "Nolite id cogere, cape malleum majorem"!
