AC Steering Wheel Cap removal
How does one remove the "AC Steering Wheel Cap" from the steering wheel?
|
Use a pocket screwdriver.
Insert pocket screwdriver between the cap and the steering wheel. Pry out the cap alittle at a time working one side then the other side. You will scratch the steering wheel alittle. But should buff out. |
Be careful not to drop or lose one of the 3 little metal clips that secure the cap to the inner ID of the steering wheel. (they are little!)
|
If you don't want to scratch the metal go buy a set of bicycle inner tube replacement pry bars from target/walmart/... They come in a pack of three, are made of plastic and ment for prying on metal without doing damage. They have come in handy many times for me in the past.

Use dental floss. Slide the floss behind and pull. Works easy on my car.

Be careful
I broke my mustang cap, then the second time I did in a different maner: Left hand use a cupping glass while with other hand insert around the small gap a nylon thread (or the dental floss(good idea Tom!)), then use this tie to press into the clips and pull slightly with cupping glass. (I hope you understood me because its a little bit difficoult to explain it in my poor english)

When replacing the cap try double sided tape. This can be safer than the 0-ring.
The plastic can get brittle though the years. . |
Just removed mine a couple of days ago....My driver's license worked great!

Thank all for the responses...

Hey Alfonso,
What's a cupping glass? Where is Lugo, LU? Your English is better than many natives on this site. Brian |
You have caps???
UT |
Brian!
Brian, it's a suction pad (cupping glass its a medical device that we use to make suction, its like a inverted cup with a small piston to extract air). I used it to remove the cap of my old mustang, I've not tried in my BDR but I think I would work in a similar way.
Lugo is a small european town (aprox 100.000) in the north of Spain. The city is rounded by a 1rst century wall (yes! almost 2000 years old) that was declarated World Heritage two years ago. www.muralladelugo.info Cheers Alfonso |
Alfonso,
I don't want to hijack this thread but... I bet you are quite the man around town with that Mustang. I can just see it next to 1,800 year-old buildings and walls. There was a James Bond movie years ago that had one of the Bond girls driving one sorta like yours. I'd love to see it one day in it's natural surroundings. Brian |
Brian!
I will send you pics, not on my mustang, I sold it, but in my BDR if, at last, I get to title it in Spain!

cobra emblem for steering wheel?
While we are removing the original AC cap, does anyone know where to get a replacement Cobra cap? Will double stick tape really hold it in place? Ted S.
|
Finishline has them and yes double sided foam tape will hold it. Thats how mine is on.
|
just took mine off...looking for little clips to fly...what I found was sticky backed foam tape on BDR car #260!
