adding oil cooler
Does the Mocal 16 row oil cooler and shroud on Finishline site fit the backdraft lower opening.Thanks for any information.

Yes it does, but be very careful with the plumbing. Many people here have managed to get their hoses crossed. After you get your cooler installed be sure and pull your distributor and take a drill motor to turn your oil pump counterclockwise before you ever start your engine to be sure you have proper oiling.
You may want to put a bypass in your cooler lines as well. Clois |
There have been a number of threads on the subject of oil coolers. In my opinion, the most important thing is to run a thermostat in the line to prevent the oil from running too cool. Mocal makes a nice sandwich style adapter that fits between the filter and the block, is 1" thick, has 1/2" NPT female fittings and works very well. You really don't need an oil cooler for the street but they just look cool and more original. FinishLine also offers an aluminum shroud that finishes off the installation but they are relatively easy to make if you are handy.
By the way, Clois, how do you tell which port on the oil cooler is "IN" and which one is "OUT"? I never thought it made any difference. |
Yes, you will need to trim the shroud though. And be sure to specify with them it is going in a Backdraft.

Like Jay said, I had to trim the shroud for it to fit. I have test fitted the cooler/shroud but do not have it hard mounted in there yet...

Better question should be. Is the Mocal cooler and shroud the best option for the backdraft or is there a better unit to go with. I really don't need the cooling but I want the look. I may install it in the nose but not actually plumb it to the car. I already have to warm the car up long enough as it is to get the oil temp to get at 50 c.

Fooler
Jay/Brian/Vintage installed my cooler as a "fooler" - real cooler but just looped the hose around the inside of the nose - looks real unless you look way up inside the nose - see pictures of BDR481 on the gallery on the Vintage website (link below).

Jay,can I order that same set up from you with the hose,fitting,shroud,and cooler. Let me know since I want to get some other things from your site as well. Is that the Mocal unit or another brand.

It there some piece of aluminum that goes over the top of the cooler that is the width of the rad opening?
