Windshield angle

Am I the only one who thinks the windshield angle on our Backdrafts is a little too vertical? The originals, ERAs and other have much more angle to them. I would like to see if the angle can be adjusted. Has anyone done this to their car?

Skip,

I'd like to see a bit more angle. Not sure what the correct angle would be, but it too sees a bit too vertical compared to others...but that is just my humble opinion. **)

I think my forehead might stick out or the top frame would be in my line of sight if it was angled back more...

Trueoo7 04-01-2008 09:21 PM

You are not alone, I have noticed that for a long time myself. It most certainly needs to be swept back more.

Cashburn 04-02-2008 06:30 AM

If you are not graced with above average height and you want more angle you can pull it off with the chrome over brass windshield assembly. You simply drill it so it has more rake. I'd like to see some more angle built in as well.

I noticed the difference between Backdraft and Kirkham windshield rake. It is really telling in these profile comparisons. (Also noticed the difference in rollbars).

I thought this thread might benefit from this link.

That was the first thing I noticed last time I saw one.

Are you saying that Backdrafts are now coming with the chrome over brass windshields and not the aluminum frames anymore?

FST FOX 04-02-2008 01:13 PM

so is a fix with the current windsheild possible?

Nope, but the option remains.

SkipB 04-02-2008 06:04 PM

Jay,

I assume you are saying the chrome over brass is somewhat adjustable, but the aluminum is not. Am I correct?

I noticed my windshield (OEM aluminum) seems to "bulge" up in the middle as if it could be laid back a little. The weatherstipping is compressed very little in the middle and alot toward the sides. This to me means that the weatherstipping would be compressed and actually seal better in the middle if it was pushed back. But, if you say it can't be done, I believe you and don't want to break mine by trying.

Sooo... are chrome over brass windshields an added option available on Backdrafts or are you saying that if someone wants to go out and buy a chrome/brass windshield and install it, they could, to get the desired effect?

Cashburn 04-02-2008 08:06 PM

It is an upgrade/option available on a new Backdraft. You can easily retrofit one to your existing car as well. When you install it you get to set the angle and then drill it, so that's how you can attain more "rake".

You could also fab a bracket to alter the factory frame rake. Take a look under the dash, it is pretty straightforward.

We put more rake in this one for example:

BTW you could go a bit further. Also my angled shot will make the angle seem diminished, nosing down...

Hi CCX!
Great Shot. That windshield looks just right. Any idea how many degrees that is?

1985 CCX 04-06-2008 04:10 PM

I would need a protractor to get true angle but I would guess 42-43 degree?

bmwdb10 04-06-2008 05:55 PM

Another CCX... My car is on stands at the moment. Leveled the frame to the floor and used a self plumbing protractor. Right on 42 degrees.
