Jimimac351 thanks for the tip! I ordered these gaskets and installed them. No more poping during shifts from exhaust leakes. My Cobra sounds great now! Thank You Thank You Thank You!

I had similar problems initially, but then switched to "Mr Gasket" product which is asbestos sandwiched onto a very fine stainless steel wire mesh. Very strong. Here is the key though that could apply to most all gaskets, . . . I ground down the area on the gasket between the actual ports to be very thin. This way when you tighten the bolts, you are not trying to compress an entire foot and a half of gasket material. You are only compressing the material that actually surrounds the ports.
You can all thank me later  . |
I third the RTV COPPER SEALANT. Years ago when we use to do manifold, and header work all the time. We bought sheets of hi-temp gasket paper, and would ballpeen many of our own gaskets to an exact fit.
I have pinched a head gasket causing a coolant leak, and no start. I took it apart, and added copper sealant to the indentation, and the motor worked another 8 years that I know of, and it was a marine motor......GOOD STUFF |

SAL, ARE THE AIR LEAKS IN THE HEADER SEALS WHAT CAUSES THE BACKFIRING, "POPPING" SOUND WHEN DOWN SHIFTING? I ALSO HAVE THE CARBON DEPOSITS WHERE THE HEADER COLLECTS INTO THE SIDEPIPE. SOME OF THE BOLTS WERE LOOSE BUT I THINK I WILL NEED A GASKET TO SEAL THERE TO.COULD THIS BE THE CAUSE OF THE BACKFIRING? IT DIDNT DO IT WHEN IT WAS NEW. THANKS, BLUE427 |

jmimac351 ,
THANKS FOR THE REPLY, I WILL LOOK INTO THAT . BLUE427 |
Blue427,
Yes I had a leak at the head. The exaust flange was slightly canted and it leaked where it met the head. The Rimflex is about an eith inch thick (about double any other gaskets) and it will fill a gap to about a 16th of an inch. As you tighten the gasket it will crush and fill the voids. No retorquing according to rimflex. Like jmimac351 said if your exhasut is popping then you have a leak. |
