Speedo going nuts
Our for a ride today and suddenly the speedometer started to go crazy readi
ing speeds of 140 mph as soon as i started moving. It vasilated wildly from zero to top end and back and forth. Mileage and tripometer worked fine. joeg |
If it's mechanical, the cable is binding.
Lube might help it but it sounds like it is too far gone. |
I had a problem where the speedo would jump up (not all the way to 140) and sometimes stay there when I came to a stop - the odometer kept ticking up though. Turned out to be a bad ground on the MSD ignition box under the dash. Grounded it to the bracket the MSD box is on and problem went away.

I recently had some speedo issues similar to you. My speedo would bounce a bit...more at lower speeds, less as the speed increased. I replaced the cable, and the little plastic drive gear that the speedo goes into on the transmission.
Works like a charm now...very smooth. |
What type of speedo do you have, mechanical or elec. Mine is elec and connects to a sensor in the diff, there is no cable just wire.
Is your voltage gauge staying steady? |
Mine had the same problem once. Turned out to be a loose connection for the speedometer connector on the BMW rear end. Just pushed it back on tight and has worked great ever since.
|
I think the stock gauges are electric. Mine are Autometer, so they are mechanical.

Ok Jay get out of that engine compartmant!!
Where would i look for the speedo to be grounded? Everything else seem's to be tight. Pulled the guage at all is tight there and checked the coection on the rear end. joeg |
i guess i was still asleep this am when i miss spelled everything

Check the two thin, black wires coming out of the MSD ignition box behind the passenger dash. If they are connected to the main wiring harness, pull them out, crimp or solder a ring terminal, remove one of the bolts securing the MSD box to it's bracket & insert the ring terminal when bolting down again. This is all of course assuming you have a similar setup with the MSD box, etc as I do on 436.
