HI Cobra 08-22-2008 10:39 AM

That do look nasty - no wonder it was wandering!

Smokingcobra2 08-22-2008 11:04 AM

Amazing that your car is the same color as mine and the break looks exactly the same.
I used a c- clamp to hold tight to the frame so we can move it.

A c-clamp... another thing I need to keep in my tool roll LOL ;)

Guys, this is *NOT* the front, it's the rear, a failure that occurred in 2005, which I repaired myself with a mig welder. Something similar happened in the front now... but I haven't seen it since I had it flatbedded over to the frame shop, and I'm not sure exactly what the new break looks like.

CobraED, I welded a triangular support underneath each side of the bracket as you said. Fix is solid so far. Flex is obviously the enemy. As you can see from the pics, there was some rust in the crack, so it happened over time.

Trueoo7 08-22-2008 08:16 PM

Correct me if I'm wrong but thats not a cracked weld, thats metal fatigue. The weld looks like its intact.

MrMagoo 08-23-2008 04:18 PM

Yes, thats metal fatigue in the rear, and I assume that is also the case in the front. I have had cracked welds on my headers, but on the frame it's been metal fatigue. The welds on the frame actually look pretty well done from everything I have seen.

Sometimes it's nice to live in New Britiain :)

Rwillia4 08-26-2008 01:14 AM

magoo,
Did your car alignment work properly? It is hard to tell but looks like the three frame holes were opened up possibly to get it tracking sraight? When I had mine alligned I think they ended up opening up these holes or this purpose. I'm wondering if I need to inspect and possibly install a backing plate.
great pictures documenting the failure.

MrMagoo 08-26-2008 04:52 AM

Rwillia4,

Yes, there is some adjustability in there, the 3 holes are elongated, and it appeared to come that way from the factory. I have not had my car re-aligned yet, but it has always tracked pretty well as it came from the factory.

What would the purpose of the backing plate be? The actual mount, which is bolted on to this tab, has three studs in it... they are only just long enough, so that might be an issue.

Blittleton 08-26-2008 09:06 AM

I'm glad that no one was hurt, I'm sure Brian will fix and it will be up to standard. Here is what Backdraft has done since car #50 or there abouts. As you can see in these photos they have added supports to the same area that is mentioned.

Hi Joe,

Mines back on the road too. Feels good! I need to do an alignment now though.

I'll post some pics of the repair ASAP. We should hook up!
