How difficult is it to register a cobra replica in california? What is involved?

Hello Josh,

Come to Breakfast at Athens any Saturday and the Presidents will fill you in on all we can on the subject of registration. There is a new bill that is going in to effect the beginning of next year that will affect how the process works.

It is House bill100 and partially reads:

SB100 requires a passenger vehicle or pickup truck that is specially constructed to be inspected by service stations authorized to perform such functions. An emission inspection will be based upon the engine model-year or model-year used in the vehicle. The owner will also have the option of choosing whether the inspection is based on the engine or vehicle model-year. Upon completion of the inspection, the referee would be required to affix a tamper-resistant label to the vehicle. They would also be required to issue a certificate that establishes the engine or vehicle model-year and emission control system application. The bill also requires the Department of Motor Vehicles to provide an initial registration to the first 500 vehicles that meet the specified criteria and are presented to the department for registration.

Specially constructed vehicles or 'kit cars' are defined as vehicles specifically built for private use, not for resale, and not constructed by a licensed manufacturer or re-manufacturer. The law also states that all such vehicles must be inspected for emission control and certification as required by the Department of Consumer Affairs.

What this all means and the changes it will entail....Who knows. If I were you I would be looking for a pre -1968 engine and go from there. come to Athens burgers in Dublin on any Saturday morning and we will be happy to share any collective wisdom we have......Should take all of 7-8 seconds.:D :D :D :D

So, if I already have a newer engine, I am in trouble? End up having to register it out of state?

I already have a car registered down in AZ.. I just don't like having to play these kind of games.

So, I'd need to get the cobra to pass emissions to register it here?

We need to talk in Real time, I would not like to have this discussion on a public forum. The DMV has been known to cruise by and it is best we talk face to face. There are many permutations to the issue engine date of mfg and out of state are a few.

It is important to note a specific statement in the new bill.

"An emission inspection will be based upon the engine model-year or model-year used in the vehicle. The owner will also have the option of choosing whether the inspection is based on the engine or vehicle model-year. "

Lets work out how to get together....

The new law gives the owner the option of choosing whether to have the car registered according to the age of the engine or the apparent age of the car (i.e., a brand new Cobra replica with a brand new engine evidently could, at the owner's option, be registered as a '65 automobile--that's a big change from the status quo, and a good one). However, there appears to be a limit of 500 cars per year, so, first come first served. The law becomes effective January 1, 2002.

I am having no luck trying to make an
appointment to have a car inspected
under SB100. The only inspector that I
was able to talk to, after 3 days of
phone tag through DMV and BAR told me that
they still have no idea how this will work,
or how I can make an appointment.

Also, I can not find out how to legally
drive the car to get it to an appointment.

I desperately want to get in under the
500 car limit, which I guess will fill
up immediately.

Any help will be appreciated. I plan to
be at the breakfast tomorrow ( 12-22 )

I received my temp reg yesterday from DMV, it's good till the end of April. Now all I need to do is put the thing together :)
