#47 Ford Mustang Cobra Drag Car
Stopped by the Ford dealer in Santa Cruz to pick up a truck for work. Always have to check out the showroom. They had #47 of only 50 drag Mustangs being built sitting on the showroom floor. I don't have any space left at my house, so I had to pass on it. He said it has 575 Hp, but will do the quarter mile in under 9 seconds Not street legal, nor does it have a vin #!!! They wouldn't let me test drive it, damit!!!! This is probably one of those cars you buy, never use, then auction it off years down the road.

That's a factory built race car Scooter! In some ways reminiscient of the original Cobra's - except for the fact you could actually license them.
Very impressive hot rod, way cool and totally street illegal ... Ed |
Not buyin' the under 9 seconds. Even with a 5 series rear, slicks, trans brake or 3200 pounds.
Or 2800 pounds. |

Maybe they meant 1/8th mile. :)

I think Ken Wilson Ford stated it exactly correctly when they said estimated. Those performance figures are marketing hype to sell the car to unsuspecting wide eyed fools who don't know any better. With 575 FWHP and 500RWHP in a 3400/3500lb vehicle (w/driver) that is at best a low 11 / high 10 sec car at around 130 mph.
Anyone with $125K of mad money who believes those 8 second performance figures will soon be separated from his money only to discover he has an 11 sec hot rod. We all have to go to school sometime. Some of us just choose schools with higher tuition costs than others. Still a nice hot rod, still way cool but not even close to an 8 sec 160 mph hot rod - at least not in that trim. Ed |
It takes 980 horse at the wheels to push a 3200 lb car to a 8.64 quarter. 1/4 Mile ET Calculator
I'm not buying any of it, especially when they say it takes 100 horse to drive the Whipple. I believe the 1/4 times, just not the 575 horse claims. Performance Specs: 575 Horsepower; 500 horsepower at the rear wheels Quarter-mile time: 8 seconds (est.) 0-60 MPH: 1.52 seconds (est.) 0-100 MPH: 3.26 seconds (est) Technical Specs: 5.0L TiVCT V8 engine with 2.9L Whipple Supercharger 100HP to spin supercharger Specially calibrated 3 speed race transmission with SFI approved housing Race-spec roll cage with Recaro Racing Seats Parachute mount on rear- used for parachute to slow car from speeds of 150 MPH+ |
These cars do run high 8 second quarter mile times as they have done it at Gateway Raceway, I race 49 Anglia with an aluminum sbf at NHRA events and have been amazed with the technology in those cars. As for the money it does take a lot to do it, we have over $50,000 just in the engine in our Anglia alone:eek:, the asking price really is not that bad for a race car as it would take alot to build one, trust me my car owners have spent at least that on the Anglia to produce the numbers that mustang does.

Don't know who is making up the 575HP number, hahahaha...:LOL: |
A buddy of mine has one of the Cobra Jet Mustangs, the second year they built them, 4.6L and his is showroom stock and he runs mid 9's all day every day....!!!!!!!!
With some up grades,he can be in the 8.90 range....back then they were going for the sticker price of around 70 grand!!!!!!! David |

A lot of engineering and testing was put into these cars before production and I can tell you the HP,gearing, and suspension set-up all works together like it should....they hook up off the line and one can use whatever HP the engine puts out..... The Ford engineers did one heck of a job when they built these cars, the ET's prove that...... David |
