Warning: Jim Long--virus!

YESTERDAY I RECEIVED AN EMAIL FROM A JIM LONG, WHO SAYS HE'S A MEMBER OF THE BACC (HE MAY WELL BE, BUT I DON'T REMEMBER THE NAME AT PRESENT)--WITH AN ATTACHMENT TITLED "MELLING." I DIDN'T RECOGNIZE HIS NAME, AND I SENT HIM BACK AN EMAIL--HE REPLIED THAT HE DIDN'T REMEMBER SENDING AN ATTACHMENT (THE BODY OF HIS EMAIL WAS COMPLETELY BLANK). SO, AGAINST MY BETTER JUDGMENT, I TRIED TO OPEN IT, BUT MY COMPUTER WOULDN'T DO IT. NOW, BACK ON THE NET, I HAVE THE STANDARD NORTON ANTIVIRUS DETECTED AND QUARANTINED MESSAGE IN MY NEW MAIL.

SO, JIM, I APOLOGIZE FOR NOT REMEMBERING YOU, BUT STOP SENDING THAT THING AROUND, IT'S CONTAMINATED!

TT

Maybe it's not Jim...

...before you drive over and bop Jim....he may not be the one sending you the mail.
Some new and very prolific viruses infect a computer, scan and "digest" all the e-mail addresses ON THAT COMPUTER...and then begin to send out infected messages using random e-mail addresses for the sender and the recipient.

In this case, a computer that had HIS and YOUR e-mail address could be the infected culprit. A message like that can be traced (with some difficulty).

Just keep your Norton current and updated and delete any detected attachments...don't OPEN them.

The KLEZ32 is a virus that exhibits this behavior. It is probably the most common virus now. As Ron said.

searanch 08-07-2002 02:54 PM

hmmmm...

A simple way of dealing with a virus in the form of an attachment is don't open it. If you receive an email with an attachment that is unsolicited don't open it - period - even if it's from your mother...

TT,

You one lucky sumbich you have Norton - don't open attachments ya didn't ask for - Got it?

:p

Tom T. 08-07-2002 03:02 PM

Ron,

Believe me, I have no intention of bopping Jim. However, his 'puter is likely infected and is attaching stuff he doesn't know about on his outbound emails. It needs an exorcism.

Searanch,

You're right. This is the first time I've ever opened one I didn't expect inbound. When I first replied to Jim's email I told him I didn't recognize the handle, and asked what was attached. He sent back a short reply, to the effect that he didn't remember attaching anything. The virus may have pulled out whatever message he had in the body and added the attachment. I've heard that can happen. Yup, glad I got Norton! This is also the first time Norton had to save me from myself! I'll try not to tempt fate again.

Thanks fellas,

TT

Not enough can be said about that!
I have been receiving an infected attachment from Jim Wheaton for the last three weeks.
The virus masquarades as an attachment coming from someone already in your trusted addressbook. it is NOT!!
Don't blame the sender, it is your address book that allows the incident.
Bop him on tyhe head anyway. It is fun!

Turk,

He ain't in my address book. I'm firm on my anti-bopping stand. Too old.
