With all things being equal
Ok,
With all this registration issure going on, i'am begining to get a little cold feet about all this..You guys need to keep me pumped up and going.. Anyway, here is the question..With all things being equal and you were not going to build your car, but buy turn-key used. What would you do? This is a California question..Would you buy out of state and used SB1578 or buy in state. And if you brought you used car in state, what would you look for concerning the registration of the car? Thanks Rick |
I bought my car used in Los Gatos and have no registration issues. The engine in my car is 40 years old, however and this may be why. I have a sticker under the hood from the state showing the age of the engine and the year the car was built. Used is definitely cheaper but you can not find out how the car was assembled, ie engine components unless you buy it from the original owner. I have so far been happy with the car, and would not consider buying a new one and taking the $25-35K depreciation component.

Most of the cars have low mileage and are well maintained. You can save alot of money and the car is registered. when you buy used. Also mentioned above there are some risks but maybe no more that trusting any engine builder or assembler.
Just do it! |
No question about it for me! TRY to buy in the state you live in. The problem here (Hawaii) is, theres not much (if anything) on the market in the way of Cobras. But your onto something BIG about the registration issues. Buying USED and ALL READY registered can be a HUGE advantage!

Do your homework, but don't worry.
I bought a two year old SPF that was registered as a 65 from another state. I am in the process of completing the CA registration through SB100/1578 and so far it has been trouble free. When I went to look at the car I was not that worried about what the car was since more or less all SPF cars are the same. I was intersted in who built the motor and what was the owner like. I got lucky and the car I bought had a very well put together motor package and you could not have asked for a better person to look after a car for the first couple of years in its life.
