wait more than 90 days and no tax?
I heard from a friend that if you purchaced an out of state vehicle and you do not bring it in to CA for 91 days there is no sales tax payment required. Has any one heard of this? I am considering buying a truck from Texas and this could be huge.

I don't think that is correct any more and if it dosen't have 7500 mi. on it you can't even bring it in ca. any more

Besides the new rule on the 7500 miles I believe it has to be legally registered outside of CA for more than 90 day to avoid the tax. Otherwise we'd all drive to Nevada to buy cars.

Not sure about cars and trucks , but when i bought my prevost bus conversion it was true no sales tax if kept out of state for91 days, which is what i did. I have heard from some of motor home owners that the time period is now 1 year and day. Long time . I stayed in motor home for 3 1/2months but would be hard to live away from main home for so long. I keep all rec.,food,r.v.,gas ect in case they ever question me.

I believe Turk posted about this and the problems he had just bringing cars to his dealership, but don't remember which post it was in. I do remember something about the 7,500 miles because that was new to me. It used to be for 90 days, but I am sure they have changed that as to many people up here were going to Oregon to buy cars and trucks. Now they just go to Oregon to stay.

Hi Mike,
As mentioned earlier, if you are considering a newer vehicle it must have at least 7500 miles on it and I don't believe the law has changed recently. I had a federal vehicle that had to be picked up by the dealer I bought it from, trailered and resold out of state because it had 5k miles on it and it was not a California state equipped vechicle. The 7500 mile limit prevents people from doing this. The tax thing is another issue. |

Just buy out of state, register it out of state, then 91 days later, bring it in.
Or, buy it out of state, register it out of state, drive it down here and don't get pulled over for 90 days...then register it. If you get pulled over, problems begin. They'll often flag you if you have a CA license and an out-of-state registered car in your name. New car laws may be different; I've never bought a "new" car. Byron |
