I passed smog
I went to BAR this morning and passed the smog check. Since all of this years SB100 numbers are long gone I smogged per the engine. My engine is a 65 390 block bored .030 over. My readings are
HC Max allowed idle 700 measured 562, 2500 RPM Max allowed idle 600 measured 97. CO Max allowed idle 5.5 measured 4.89, 2500 RPM Max allowed idle 4.5 measured 4.03. It can be done. Now I need my bond and I will be back to dealing with DMV. I'm sure they'll make up some new problem, but this one is over (at least for 2 years or an SB number). Dave V |
YAHOO!!! Good for you, Dave!!!
If you need a contact for a bond, then please let me know...ok? Congrats, Randy R... |
Congrats Dave!!:3DSMILE:

Great news on your smog test. Did Elliott assist?

Hi Dave,
How did they tell what year the block was??? What's with the "bond", is that in place of insurance?? I figure that my odds at an SB100 are slim to none so I guess that I'll be doing it your way before too long! Thanks, Jon |
Thanks guys. Yes Elliot helped. The engine needs an enclosed breather system, so we need to change the valve covers so that both of the valve covers had breathers. One goes to the PCV valve and back to block and the other goes to the air cleaner. I needed to get an air cleaner with a nipple, but I had no problem finding one. I blocked off the block breather. As far as adjustments, I just cleaned the carburetor, changed the plugs and then we adjusted the carburetor to run leaner. We ended up at a better setting then before so I will not make any after test changes. There is a date code on the block.
As far as testing, the BAR does not have any requirements for pre 66-67. Since I was older, the BAR tested used the minimum requirements from 66-67. After 67 the requirements get tighter. I'm not sure what the bond is, but it is required. I have to have the bond because the registration was pulled. If you are just registering, I'm not sure if it would be required. Dave V |
Dave,
Great news on your smog test. I go tomorrow, Thursday, to have mine done at the BAR in Livermore. Got a question. If the BAR has no smog requirements for pre 66-67 motors, mine is a 65-427 S/O, then why would there be any smog test at all on a pre 66-67 engine?? I guess I will find out tomorrow. BTW-Dave, do you know your cam specs. I have a feeling mine will fail because of my cam. I-310/598, E-320/614 .050=254/266, lobe seperation 110. Tonight I will lean out my carb. connect my PCV and route crank case vapors back into the motor. Mike |
Good luck Mike, but those cam specs will make it very difficult to pass the idle test. Keep us posted. I just passed the BAR smog last week. You have a PM.

Bill,
My BAR test today went awful. When I got to the BAR guy at Las Positas College in Livermore the guy first asked how I wanted to register it. I said ideally SB100 but we all know that ain't gonna happen till January 06 at best. So I told him by engine year. My block number is C5AE-H which in my book states it is a 1965 to 12-9-65 block. He verified this by getting under my car and read the numbers himself. He pulled out some documents he had but couldn't find my number with a -H option. Just the C5AE. So he calls his boss who told him to find the date code on the front of the block. The only number we found was 352, duh! So he calls his boss again and gets told that the 65 blocks went into 66 cars so I need to smog it as a 66. I said no way because of the additional smog requirements. I politely argued for a bit but could soon see I was getting no where. So I bailed. Now I don't know what to do. I won't be checking my work email until Monday. If you could forward your PM to warptmind1@comcast.net I'll check it this weekend. Thanks, Mike |
