Car on ebay
I am instering on this car, I have talked to the seller and he said the car is not SB-100 CA register, but register as special contructed vehical and no need smog check
I have read many thread on the SB-100, but never heard of this case Can some one advice ebay # 320076305008 Regards TC_SJ |
My take on this is IF the car does not have an SB100 number, it is subject to serious DMV registration and smogging problems. I know the 1st Cobra I bought was registered as a 1965 Ford with NO SB100 number and I had to actually return it to the dealer who sold it to me and he had to get the car OUT of California in order to sell it or face severe FINES from the EPA jerks!! I personally would NOT buy a Cobra in Kalifornia unless it had an SB100 number OR I wanted to wait and try and get one in January 08. Luckily I found another car that was SB100 registered (and I think it's a nicer Cobra anyway). IMO.

TC, I'd suggest that you ask to see the registration for the car. Be sure to get the year that its registered as (example my car is 2006 SPCNS) If its not SB100, and it's SPCNS then it will need to pass smog, my Roush 427R did not pass, and I'm guessing that motor wont either as it's got more power.
That said if the price is right and you like the car you could always go for the SB100 in January 08. Daryl |

Car is 12 years old and only 377 miles.............no sb100............would make me wonder

Just curious. If a car was previously registered in CA as a specially constructed (i.e. not mis-represented as say a 1965 Cobra) vehichle prior to SB100, can the title be succesfully transfered without going through the SB100 process?
It sounds like TC needs to make a trip to the DMV with the buyer (or with a copy of the registration) and see what the nice people at the DMV have to say. |
There is another way to register that required a smog check every two years. But outside of SB100 I don't know on any way to avoid smog completely. It do sound fishy, but the seller says he is a bonded licensed Calif Auto Dealer. Hmmm, you would tend to think he knows what he's talking about concerning registration. It is not so clear he knows much about 'motors', claims the 351 built by Ernie Elliot is a 'side oiler'. Now THERES some classic Cobra 'hype', what else with his 'story' is suspect...

I just went through the SB 100 process this past January and I believe that you can get a termporary operating permit for three months, and was told by the DMV that you could extend a few times until you could apply for the SB100 in Jan. of 2008. But Special Construction does not mean smog exempt. You still have to pass smog or get the SB 100 or work off temporary permits for as long as you can. There are counties in Calif. that only require you to smog once, and then you don't have to again, but you would still have to get it smogged that first time and have it pass.

It was that 'side oiler' claim that irked me. That statement suggests the car is 'more correct' some how. It's a nicley done replica and should stand on it's own merits, a well built pedigreed engine for instance, nice paint, etc. Pretending it is something it is not (a side oiler) is an open invitation to assess the car AND the sellers 'accuracy' level in general. Such misleading statements generate a 'red flag', in my opionion. Perhaps it was a simple mistake by a well meaning seller, maybe... Perhaps he is equally sincerely mistaken concerning the registration laws for this car. |
It is a nice looking car but, I would make the dealer prove to me that he can get it registered or my money back guarantee.

If you can get the car at a fair price, buy it.
Many on this website have managed to get SB100 numbers, and I would imagine that you could too. A temporary may need to be issued until you can get yours, but others have managed to enjoy their toys while waiting for the SB100. This car is almost identical to the Red Unique that the Weaver's personally own as their show car. Unique has built several very high end cars for pro ball players, and this sounds like one of them. Ernie Elliot is a friend of the Weavers and built several motors to go in their cars, most of which cost around 35K. No Ernie, it is not a side oiler, and everyone knows that modern cup motors are small-blocks, so I think this is a mute point. Another positive for this car of this vintage is that it was most likely painted by Alan Weaver. Alan does not paint their cars anymore, but his paint work is TRUE show quality, not just a cut and buff to make it look good. This car would cost 70K to reproduce yourself today if you did all of the labour except for the paint work. If I were in your shoes I would use the SB100 as a bargaining point, but I would not hesitate to buy this car if the price is right. Justin |

And the unknowing guy who doesn't know about clubcobra or much about cobras except the big ones had 427 side oilers. Don't assume everyone knows.

Cup motors do not make for good street driving. I had the priviledge to drive a Unique, very similar to this car, with an Elliot Cup motor. It sounds awesome, but unless you keep it way up in the RPM's, it's no fun to drive. Remember, Cup motors are made to run at the top of the RPM scale, not for cruising around town.
