No VIN
I plan to go to the DMV either today or tommorow to start the process of registering my cobra.. However she has no VIN stamped on her. Should I stamp it on the frame or somewhere else before I get this party started??

I just had the same problem in NJ this morning. They asked for a "rub" of the VIN off the car. I don;t believe there is one. I may need to get it stamped? Let me know how you make out.

You should be OK with no VIN in CA to start the process. The DMV will send you to the CHP to check over your receipts (basically checking for stolen parts) and the CHP will assign you a VIN number.
Be sure when you go back to the DMV that they update whatever placeholder VIN they put in the computer with the real number assigned by the CHP or you will have paperwork trouble later. Daryl |
chp mounts a plate to the frame with the number they assign.make sure the number is corect everytime it gets written. check the no. of digets also.it must have 17 places or you will have problems later. Just face it you will have problems later.ha ha.

In my case CHP was able to use the factory serial number because it had the required number of digits. I believe it is 14 digits. The form somes from the DMV. You probably could get the form first. You will need a temp or a transfer slip to drive the car.

The CHP assigns a vin on a tag with the format CAXXXXXX. 17 digits does not sound like an assigned number from the CHP but and number already on the vehicle the the CHP used.

So how long does the DMV give you to do the CHP/BAR and other associated tasks?? 30 days, 60 days, reasonable time..?

mine took over a year. 5 top's . 17 didgits was a point of contention with the DMV in sac and CHP in Truckee. DMV left one zero off and I had to do a lot of running aroud to get it fixed .Wasted a lot of time and money,ect. My reg and licence cost $ 2000. cause of all the bull. Both my other cars have 17 didget numbers, check your newer cars. The DMV might have just been mess'in with me . Who knows, maybe they will like you more than me. I hope so , for your sake. Well for hahas I called my local CHP office.. They can't see me til July 5th. I made the appointment today.. I guess I should tell the DMV that tommorow so they give me a long enough TOP.

CHP used my Shelby assigned vin number: CSX4795.

I also have my factory stamped number as my vin. Did you try another CHP office? The one here in San Jose on OToole ave was quick with thier appointments when I made mine.

When I lived in Fairfield, they gave me the same song and dance but I called the CHP in Napa and they took me the same day.
Give them a call. Curtis is correct in that the CHP assign numbers that start with a CA and 6 numbers after the CA. I believe that 17 numbers is not correct. When I did my Superformance this January/February, they took my SPF number from the frame and gave that as the VIN number. Jim |
guys youre missing the bigger picture. Onefastmustang I'm assuming you dont have an SB100 sequence number already if I'm wrong disregard......
Basically while waiting for Jan 2nd to get SB100 you want the CHP office with the long wait for an appointment. This give you a legit reason to request a TOP from your DMV office. Slow, redtape goverment agency is your friend in this case :eek: Daryl |

I got insurance after I got my TOP.... Search the forums for insurance, there's a tons of info. Midwest classics seems to be a favorite. Robbin Terry is the guys name, really nice guy.

I talked to my Farmers agent and he confirmed that he'll write the policy as soon as I visit the DMV and start the process.

CHP in San Jose let me use my Midstates stamped frame number. only 7

This stuff varies from station-to-station. I got into RWC within 30 days of my call. I pleaded if I could use the serial number of the FFR that's pre-stamped from the factory but the guy was going by the book. :(
Regardless if you've gone through the SB100 process or not, you'll need to go to the DMV with invoices in hand. So get the form and have the VIN applied then go to the next step ( BAR ). In the worst case, you're 6 months ahead of the game for Jan. 2nd 2008. :) Make photo copies of it afterwards. I got messed up somewhere in all the paper work and had to have a peace officer re-verify a form because I didn't have a copy of a form I had already submitted. :( The whole ordeal drove me up the wall and took 3 months longer than it should have and 3 more trips to the DMV than was necessary. I'm so glad it's over with. For B&L inspection is another place you should get references from on this site. I went to my local Greenslip and I swear I was going to shoot everyone in there. They wanted a backup lamp, and charged me addtional $20 once I did, to verify the backup lamp!!!!! Never use these guy's. They don't a darn thing about these cars. |
