Enclosed Trailer for Rent? (So. Bay)
I have an event I'm going to on Aug 19 at Thunderhill, and have been thinking about buying an enclosed trailer. I was hoping - would someone would let me borrow or rent their enclosed trailer, so I can get a feel for how it tows and see if I really want to purchase one and find a place to store it (any advice here is appreciated as well)?
I found one place on craigslist that will rent for $95/day... seems a bit steep but I'll go for that as a fall back plan. Thanks, Nathan |
what are you towing with?

Nathan; California Trailer Rentals has closed trailers. Roy at 408 348-6225

I just bought a Serpent Express. It's seems like a good compromise. Light weight and made for a Cobra.

Towing with a VW Touareg V8 (7700lbs stated capacity).
Thanks Bill, I'll give Roy a call. |
You will not be able to tow an enclosed trailer with that tiny vehicle. The trailers weigh at least 4500 pounds unless it is aluminum and that would be a 20 footer which is really small. A 24 is close to 5000, your car will weigh at least 2500, you weigh something and any other stuff you take has weight as well. You can pull it but it will be really slow and scary.... Get a suburban or a Ford F250 diesel.. you will not be happy.... Use an open trailer or the Serpent thingy... trust me....

The Serpent Express weighs 1800 pounds. Add a 2500 pound car and even a Yukon can tow it. :)

20' is not "small" by any means. Too big for a toureg, but not small. Especially if you only plan to use it to haul a cobra. I have an 18' open trailer and it's big enough to haul a pair of sand rails, I even put my F250 crew cab 4x4 diesel on it once just too see how big it really was. It fit just fine... the expedition's suspension didn't like all that wieght, but it fit! haha if you are planning to only use the trailer for hauling a cobra.. a 16' trailer would work just fine, 18' would be better. Anything over 18' to haul a little cobra is just going to be overkill. If you are running a 90" wheelbase cobra, it's only like 10ft long! haha
Ahh.. just trade the toureg. Get an F450, and a 45 foot enclosed trailer. I'm pretty sure the cobra, or 4, should fit in there. |
I've read some great things about the touareg's towing close to its capacity. I suppose it couldn't hurt to try doing so locally before a longer trip. i guess i'll hunt down a flat bed for this time...

Nathan, why don't you drive the car up there. It's only 3 hours and plenty of places to stop. I took mine up there 3 weeks ago and it was a piece of cake.

I have some stuff on the car I don't want to ride on the streets with - primarily slicks, harsher brake pads, and I want to carry an extra set of tires, and some tools... you are right, though, its not unreasonable. Interested in coming up for this one, Dave?
