AAA member question
Hello Folks
I just rec'd an offer of AAA membership card on the mail for $49.00 a years, its offer towing and other services s well, I have one quick question about towing, it only offer to tow 5 miles to the nearest services, what if you go over 5 miles, what is the extra charge Thanks Tan |
Sign up for the AAA+ card - it is good for 100 miles.

Tan - The best bet is AAA's 100 mile towing option. That way, you can get your car towed right to your house at no additional cost. I got an ad in the mail from AAA and they also offer 200 mile towing. Use it once (which I did) and it's paid for.

I have yet to sign up even after getting offers about three times a year, I guess because I've never been in a situation where I needed emergency service, I keep putting it off?. It really does look to be a good deal........

You pay it. My AAA card has 1 200 mile tow and 3 or 4 100 mile tows. It costs about 100.00 per year.

When I let my membership lapse, I had to wait a year as a normal member before they would let me sign up for plus. After a year I did and it is great piece of mind. They will cover any car you are driving (friends, rental, etc.)

Tan - here is a link that compares the different AAA membership programs. The main difference between Plus and Premier would appear to be that for an additional $25 for the primary member, you get an extra 100 miles in towing. I use the Plus and would recommend it.

Sometimes your car insurance will have towing as part of the coverage. I know Midwest Classics does. |
I have had my Cobra towed more than a couple times for various reasons, and the drivers have all been real careful with the job. Never nickle and diming me on the miles either. To put it differently, if the tow distance was 10 miles...and my aaa covered 7...I have never been charged for the difference.

I've got the AAA Plus.....never leave home without it. Due to a run of bad luck, I've had to use it 3 times in the last couple of months. When I called with a dead starter in my 1994 Isuzu Trooper I waited almost an hour before the Tow showed up.
When I called with Cobra problems, I got 3 AAA trucks inside of 15 minutes.....:) -Jon |
I have the AARP + road package which is a lot like AAA but the wife is
free, I have the 100 mile and I think it was under $70 last year. Used it once on the Cobra and the driver backed in and spotted it in my garage, and used it for another car when a tire went flat and so did the spare. No problems - I have it more for my wife's benefit but I has come in handy. |
There is also AAA Platinum i think, it is what i signed up for.

I think for all the years I've had CSAA, I've NEVER had a car towed. I have basic tow and if the one time I do need to tow over 5 miles, I don't think the charge would be enough to offset the some 20+ years I've been a member not paying the extra money for 200 mile. But I can see it being pretty valuable I guess, for our cars. I'm just odd that way. :D

Go for the AAA+ it may never be needed but it is there. I keep it for my Cobra (just in case) but never used it until my wife and I had driven our MB to Dallas last spring when the alternator went out about 5:30 PM on a Friday. Called the MB roadside assistance and I was beyond their recovery area. Next I called AAA and they showed up in about three hours and towed me about 40 miles to the nearest MB dealership in Plano, TX. No charge and even though it took a long time to get my place in the rotation on a Friday night I like the safety net that AAA provides.
