CA regestration / SB100

I will be bringing a car in from out of state...and have heard about the SB100 legislation - but from the thread below, it seems that only a certain number are given out each year; is that correct?

So, can I apply for the SB100 waiver before the car arrives in state - or does the care need to be here?

Appreciate any information...

Fillippo - Here are some sites for reference. I hear that there may still be a few sequence numbers available. I think you need to have the car here first. Good luck.

Hi Filippo,

Assuming that the car was previously registered in another State, all you need is the pink slip and probably the bill of sale from the previous owner to get started.

You don't need to be in possession of the car to submit the paperwork and pay your fees (sales tax on the total amount and license fees). Don't mess around with the purchase price, they're looking for every penny and have a pretty good idea what the average cost of a replica is. If they ask, well....you are legally in possession of the car. ;)

That's correct, they only issue 500 SB100 Certificates per year. It sounds like there are still a handful left, so if you hustle you might not have to wait until January.

Here's another good thread.

DMV Investigators in CA are actively auditing the last several years of transactions looking for loose change.

Dont get caught on the wrong side of this , it is not worth the hassle. ---Steve

Yes, they want your money. I was just playing by the rules and added up my current money spent on my FFR (still being painted) and estimated about 800 hours of labor at minimum wage. I think I told them it was $37K. Tax & Reg. came out to just over $3,000!!! Guy who built his E-M, and shall remain anonymous, quipped only $9K and they taxed him on that amount! Grrrr....
