Let's see... all cars other than ERAs suck, all engines other than FEs suck, small blocks are crap, solid rears are garbage, I know more than anyone on this forum about everything there is to know, ehhhrrr... that ought to do it.

I think "all engines other than FEs suck" is still too broad. It should be "all engines other than 427-based FEs suck" and "Cobras with more than one roll bar suck" should also be incorporated.

... and when is that Lykins gonna get off his ass and start some work on that FE build of his so that we can kibitz?

I think you've exhausted your supply of playmates. But how about some "taking-the-plastic-bag-off-for-restaurant-season" snapshots?
That may disgust most of us and keep this 1 year old thread on track?

She's out of the bag and, sadly, the bag is in the trash. A very small drip of clutch fluid from when I R&R'd the master cylinder last year created a nice puddle of fluid over the last five months. Not quite enough to let air in the system, and it appears to be nothing more than a loose hose clamp, but I can't reuse the bag... so I tossed it.

Re-bleed the cylinder after tightening-but as The World's Most Interesting Man--you knew that.

427w SBF vs. the traditional 427FE BB?
Weighs approx. 200lbs. less than a Big Block 427FE.
Improved internals over factory 351w. (Forged Connecting Rods, Crank and Pistons)
Same Dimensions as 351w.
Approx. 2-3 inches less in Width and Height than 427FE.
Huge Torque increase over factory 351 engine (500+lbs. when built properly)
Runs Cooler than a Big Block Ford.
Vehicle Handles and Corners Better than a Big Block Engine.
Just as Fast or Faster 0-60 or 0-100mph times than a Big Block.
Runs thousands less in cost to a Big BLock.
Still have the bragging rights of a 427 cubic inch engine under the hood.

Partial list of course, the decision is trivial :)

... take that extra savings with a SBF and throw it at an aluminum DART block, now you're using your noodle!

Just for Popcorn...

How about we throw the LS7 in the mix.

427W: "Weighs approx. 200lbs. less than a Big Block 427FE."

LS7 weighs approx 400 pounds (458 pounds fully trimmed) which is about 120 pounds lighter than an iron head 351W based motor. However the gap is a little closer if you run alloy heads.

427W: "Improved internals over factory 351w. (Forged Connecting Rods, Crank and Pistons)"

LS7 has Titanium con rods from the factory, 6 bolt main bearing caps, factory dry sump etc.

427W "Same Dimensions as 351w."

LS7: Smaller than 351W

427W "Approx. 2-3 inches less in Width and Height than 427FE."

LS7: Approx. 2-3 inches less in Width and Height than 351W

427W "Huge Torque increase over factory 351 engine (500+lbs. when built properly)"

LS7: 475ft/lbs factory stock. This is a conservative factory rating. Dyno tests of stock crate engines have shown this number to be closer to 500. Add a cam and that number will jump to well over 500ft/lbs and 600+ HP.

427W: "Runs Cooler than a Big Block Ford."

LS7: designed to run on pump gas, drive to work during the week and then clean up at the track on the weekend. Comes with a factory warranty too.

427W "Vehicle Handles and Corners Better than a Big Block Engine.
Just as Fast or Faster 0-60 or 0-100mph times than a Big Block."

LS7: Umm... Have you seen the times they run them round the Nuremberg Ring?

427W: "Still have the bragging rights of a 427 cubic inch engine under the hood."

Let the arguing begin... LOL!!:LOL::LOL:

AL427SBF 05-11-2011 09:27 PM

No argument here, but there is one minor difference you overlooked. When I park at the local watering hole and get the inevitable "what's under the hood?" I can proudly pop the latches without fear of "you ruined it!" :D

But does it sound the same as a BB? tin-man

Aussie Mike 05-12-2011 12:38 AM

Just saw your avatar Tin-Man. I spent a lot of time working up in China and saw heaps of those big diesel tillers chugging along the road with a big trailer on the back. Invariably with about 5 ton of rock piled on it too.

Yesssssiiiirr... Does right well nestled between the carbon fiber fenders of my Z06:cool: A tune and headers yielded 509 at the tires, sad to say 30 more HP than my KC all aluminum 482" side oiler laid down.

Sorry though... BB side oiler (or at least a FE) all the way in a Cobra. But... I do understand the emissions, gov't red tape, import laws etc, etc... that you're faced with. In your shoes, I probably would go the same route. The LS7 is one mean mutha:)

Yeah, Mike, they are sight to behold and can hold a lot of stuff. I saw one today with 20 foot long bamboo poles on it stacked at least five feet high:eek:

Where did you hang out in China? tin-man

Aussie Mike 05-12-2011 09:02 AM

I worked all over China back in the late 90's. From right up north in Harbin and on down south to Hong Kong.

I was thinking about it the other day and here's a list of the cities I've worked in as best I can remember.
Harbin, Yantai, Shanghai, Beijing, Nanjing, Suzhou, Fuzhou, Xiamen. There may have been a couple of others. Some of the guys in my team got as far west as Urumqi but not me. I got to go to Harbin in the winter. Everyone assumed I was Russian since it's so close to Siberia.

I was working for a company deploying optical fiber and telephony equipment.

I went back a few years ago and the place has really changed a lot. Cars everywhere and not nearly as many bicycles.

Where are you based?

Cheers

You know this all sounds great, the only problem I have is, does anyone remember the last time a Chevy won the Engine Masters Challenge? I know my memory isn't what it use to be but I can't think of any.
