need 8.8 rear end

DV or anybody else who might know, I have the 8" rear end on my CR. It's also known as the baby 9. I need to make some repairs or up grades and want to consider an upgrade to an 8.8. Currently my 8 has a limited slip but needs rebuilding, also it's got 411 gears which I want 3.75 or 3.50 also drum brakes which I want disc, and the housing may have a slight bend in it. Since all these items add up to fix $$, I'm thinking of going to an 8.8 or 9". I have 57 1/2" from the inside wheel to the inside wheel or brake drum to brake drum. What rear should I be looking for or are all the upper and lower arms, shock mounts all custom installed to fit the CR? Or is the rear a direct bolt on unit that fits the CR, from a specific year car or truck? Thanks for your replies.

Check with Curry Motorsports---they have /do more rear ends than anyone or maybe even everyone

John,
According to my manual the stock rear end is a 1986-1990 Mustang. No mods required.

I would take the opportunity to upgrade to a 9" if your going to do the swap.

Just my $0.02

9"s are reallly --heavy --

--if you can get a 31 splined 8.8 with 5 lug , that would be the ticket.

I'm probably wrong, but here's some numbers I found. I would think some extra weight in the rear area would be a good thing.

FORD REAR END WEIGHT COMPARISON 8" vs. 9"

8-inch Rear End Assembly Weight : 170 lbs.

1. Housing: 36 lbs.

2. Axles: Medium Journal, 28-spline -15 lbs. ea.

3. Brakes: Small 10" x 1¾" Drum Assemblies - 22 lbs. ea.

4. 3rd Member: Reinforced Revision 8-inch Case - 60 lbs.

9-inch Rear End Assembly Weight: 194 lbs.

1. Housing: 38 lbs.

2. Axles: Large Journal, 28-spline - 18 Lbs. ea.

3. Brakes: Massive 11-1/32 x 2½" Drum Assemblies - 26 lbs. ea.

4. 3rd Member: Conventional Diff. - 68 lbs.
a. w/Traction-Lok Diff. - 71 lbs.

I can provide everything that you will need including a new 9" Ford housing, axles, a center section with your choice of gears and differential, etc.

If your car is based around a Fox Mustang 8.8", it's really easy to swap.

My Son has one (8.8) from a 91 5.0 Mustang. He is in the middle of building a race car and this one came out of the car. Currently has drum brakes. I doubt he would want much for it. It is straight and undamaged.

tcrist 04-16-2010 03:36 PM

Rick,

Is it an 8.8 or a 9".

MaSnaka 04-16-2010 04:35 PM

Rick,
I have the unparalell 4-link at 57 1/2" measured from the outside of the brake drums. I have a feeling that your son's may be a 3 link. Any idea what the gears are inside? posi? Please let me know.

John, SVO sells a "KIT" to change the mustang drums to Disc. Very simple swap.
If you go to a 9", who ever sells you the housing needs to sell you the same configuration of the brackets as an 8.8.

Just so you know I ran / raced the Viper powered Double Venom with an 8.8 for years!

8.8 / Pretty sure posi was OEM in 91 with 5.0, 3.23 gears 4lug.

I have 30 new 8.8" Ford 3.73 rearends in stock. I narrow them and can supply 5 lug axles & brakes and make them the width you want starting at $1610.00.

John I ran the 8.8 in my CR with 580 ft/lb torque engine. Unless you run slicks you would not hook up enough to ever break it.
