Catalytic Converters
Was wondering if anyone has figured out a way to put cats on a Classic Roadster. Is there a way to put a pair inside the side pipes? Will the Factoryfive set up fit in the engine compartment? Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

We did it once at E-M some years ago when we built a kit powered by a supercharged 4.6 Ford. I can not remember the name of the manufacture, but they made us cats the same diameter as the sidepipe casing. We used a muffler insert and pressed the cat in front of the muffler. Each end of the case was then bevelled to hold the muffler and cats in place. A threaded bung was welded on to the inside of the collector for the Co2 sensor and the whole thing was welded together in our jig. It must have worked as we never were told otherwise. I'm sure any kit car manufacture that makes their own sidepipes could do the same. Good luck!

Thanks excobrabuilder, I've been thinking along those same lines. I could weld 4" round universal cats with 3" inlet into shortened side pipes and then wrap the whole deal with a Corvette style heat shield. Probably should bounce the idea off state inspector before proceeding but sounds doable.

Wayne,
I had a patent on Cobra sidepipes when we made the first "DV". It works and at the time passed all smog tests and C.A.R.B. tests. You might try to find "Thunder Motors" in Texas on the web. Guys name is Wayne. The pipes ended up beautiful and unless you had a "snooper" hooked up you couldn't even tell they were catalytic. I THINK we used 6 cylinder Ford Escorts per side! Loss of HP wasn't ugly either. 490HP would loose about 15 at the wheels, DV PS, Because the Viper ECM used four 0-2's we had to install them too, it all worked great! |

Wayne, Have to ask why???
jersey427owner Are you trying to register the car in NJ? Emmissions have to match the motor sometimes. You can use just Cats in the side pipes if you get the 3" round ones. You will not need mufflers. You might need 2 O2 sensor bung holes for computor to run the motor. Do you need 2 or 4 sensors?
The other issue is, is the motor stock or has work. May have to get a custom calibration to get through emmissions and then reload the better one for the car. Google cats. There are a couple of companies that make round tube ones. The easiest way is to get a set of side pipes and cut them open and swap the mufflers for the cats and reweld them. Send pipes out for coating. You will also need shields in NJ with side pipes. Leave the drivers seat out of the car at inspection if the car has only one roll bar. They will fail you for this.
