gas tank
i have started my own project.... cr body and not much else. did the cr kits use donor fuel tanks, or were the tanks part of the kit? are they normally located under the trunk?
thanks |
The gas tanks were built by CR. They do fit under the trunk and are attached with straps. They also have the filler tube half way up on the right side of the tank which makes it a pain to put fuel in.

Terry,
Common complaint. Hint: Make sure the vent tube isn't pinched, especially where the front mounting rail passes right by the vent. Many times, including 'me' pinching the vent tube while installing the tank seems to be almost a 'standard'! :( If it's open filling the tank should be easy! DV |
I guess that it is always possible. I will check it out.

The gas tank is a problem. It seems I'm always having to throw $50 bucks down the hatch there.
Seriously though I checked the vent tube and blew compressed air through it to make sure it was clear, I was preparred for what ever shot back out at me so be careful if attempting this. It was clear by the way. I found the best way to fill the tank is to turn the gas pump nozzle so the hose end is at about 7:00 if 12:00 is facing towards the front of the car and only at about a half pull on the trigger. I fussed with my fuel gauge because it was erratic at times, jumped around like it was shorting out, then steady, then nothing, it was like this for years. I traced the sending wire and replaced the sending wire still no better, then the light bulb moment...check for ground and bingo, the only grounding was by incidental contact with the frame. I attached a ground wire from the tank to the frame. The guage works great now. I was at the point of dropping the tank and replacing the whole sending unit and so I am thrilled I found an easier solution. I know I am off topic here but thought my experiences might help getting your tank sorted out. John |
What was the size of the original tank? (volume of fuel) I have the original tank in mine and the fuel gage on empty only takes about 11-12 gallons. I think I read some where it was a 19 gal tank but I'm not sure.
Thanks: |
19 gallons is correct. If you can only get about 11 - 12 gallons it is probably because you don't have the vent pipe on, or it is pinched so it can't vent the air.
Once I got mine on I never had a problem filling it again. |
Mine only holds 15 gals. I ran out once and from empty it took 15 to where I saw fuel standing in the filler neck. My memory is a little vague, it could have been 14 but no way 19. I was happy cause the guy I bought the car from told me 12.

John, I have never been able to get more than 14.5 gal in the tank. I have been reading this thread with real interest.

I am still looking for a replacement fuel tank for 1996 Excal, I heard classic Roadster 2 is the same tank any one have atock tank for sale? Pablo
|
Get ahold of Nick Acton and have him make you one. I love my 24.5 gallon tank.
|
Pablo,
The Excaliber IS the same. They may have hooked up a return line for the EFI gut they are the same. The OEM< CR's is supposed to be 14.8 gallons +. 19??? Not an OEM tank! DV Many places on the web will make you one. Have them install a center mounted "swiss Cheese" baffle wall! |
