Could be the starter getting too hot. When it cools a bit, it spins. Heard of this a number of times. Often when the exhaust is too close to the starter. If this is the case, it may be that the starter has air passing over it when driving, keeping it a bit cooler.

If it cranks it's not a starter issue maybe it's the coil so I would check for spark when it occurs.

Look at the field coil/light emitting diode module inside the distributor.
Most likely the above, electronics do not like heat.

it crank's no spark !

Dwight 09-03-2014 05:28 PM

no spark, I would look at the coil.

could be fuel filter. Maybe fuel pump.

Mallory Dist for sure unless your spark box is to near heat! The GMPP 572/620 I had ate MSD modules like candy! When they went bad it WOULD NOT start when hot, let it cool and it would fire right up. Got rid of the distributor module and put an old 6AL in the glove box and never had another problem!

I had this problem as well when I first got my Cobra on the road. It turned out to be heat soak boiling the fuel in the carb and lines and likely creating vapor lock. The solution was to add a 1/4" phenolic spacer between the carb and intake, and also to insulate the fuel lines with fiberglass/reflective wrap from McMaster-Carr. Solved the problem.

Simple test fuel or spark, pour a cap of fuel in the carb! Or move the throttle and see if it's getting a shot of fuel, if it's getting fuel and don't start it's spark!

:-)

In his post #5, he already said, "cranks, no spark"!!!

Possibly carb flooding? Try holding the gas pedal to the floor while cranking. Old school start up on carbureted engines.
