That's an excellent point Tommy.

There is no cure or vaccine because no company has been given funds to research. Nobody has been funded because it has only been a third world problem.
No company will find a cure for an illness that happens in a jungle in Africa - only to give it away for free. The three countries now with wide-spread Ebola (Zaire) are among the poorest in the world, with the least evolved health care systems in the world. They reside a population that do not trust the government and healthcare that can or can not provide the help they need. They do not trust the international helpers either. Some of the tribes believe medicine is "the devil" - and therefore will not contact anyone either. Who do you think tends to the sick ones in the villages? Its the adult women. They take care of their own. Or tries to. When they get sick, its their children who tries to help them. So they get sick too. When someone dies - they are still contagious to the ones who bury them. Ebola will not be contained in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. There is simply no system to do the containment. It will keep traveling until the borders have been completely shut off. Growing an anti-dote takes a lot of time. A plant is infected, it grows, and when it gets sick - the DNA is extracted and used to create medicine. It takes time. It gives low volumes. But it is being done - and the effect of the meds (Zmapp and Zmab) is being analyzed for improvements. |
