Pulling dash on CR

Newbie here, I just bought a 1992 classics roadster and a couple of the toggle switch's in the dash are broken. access is very very limited, I can remove the switch from the back of the dash thru the heater vent access after I pull it, but there is not enough wiring to pull the switch's thru the access hole. I also need to replace the cassette radio with a newer CD version. What is the best way to access these components. Is pulling the dash out several inches feasible?

Pulling the dash on a CR isn't all that hard, IF you know where all the fasteners are at. You'll need to drop the steering shaft (sometimes a trick in itself) and remove the glove box (if it has one). There should be sheet metal screws fastening the flange that runs across the top of the dash to the cowl brace. These screws can be hard to see/find as you'll be doing contortions and looking upward into a dark place or just feeling for screw heads with your fingers. The screw heads can be hard to feel if the dash covering wraps over the flange. Depending on the dash (if it's the one that extends down to the tunnel in the middle) there's also likely fasteners to some angle brackets there as well.

I had to pull the dash on mine recently for much the same reason. Even though I built the car 20 years ago, I had trouble finding all the screws on the flange and ended up ripping a couple through the fiberglass flange. It's not a big deal as the dash now has two fewer fasteners and it's staying in place fine.

I hope this helps.

Much needed help!

Thanks for the reply, Its sounds like its not going to be easy but it has to be done. Cassette player has to go also. My car does have the drop down center in the dash so its full of gadgetry also. Hopefully I'll find all the screws you mentioned. Its a factory built car and I hope there is enough "slack" wiring to give room for the dash to pull away from the cowl enough for clearance. Thanks again for the help.

331lxstang, mine is also "factory built", by Don himself in late 2004 and my dash is the drop down style. Be careful when trying to pull the dash out for access. My wiring left some to be desired and was full of butt connectors that weren't crimped correctly so every time something would not work or light up after reassembly.
It got so bad I completely re wired the car front to back.
It is correct the
At the steering column will have to be dropped and I might suggest using painters blue tape on the sides just ahead of the top of the doors to protect the paint from the backside of the dash rubbing against it.
Be careful of the grounds as they are most likely Xmas tree'd all over.
Good luck.
John
