Coolant expansion and recovery tank
Hello All,
I'm back in the rebuild process of my CR1. Plumbing brake lines and getting the engine reinstalled with new clutch and refreshed transmission. I am interested in what you guys are using for coolant expansion and recovery tanks? The original CR1 only used a high mounted radiator cap in the upper hose and had no provision for coolant expansion/recovery, just used the fill neck and fitting to allow expansion coolant to flow onto the ground. I'm not sure if I can use one of the factory style cobra tanks(Mid 60s Ford) that mounted on the intake manifold due to the fact that I'm running March billet pulley drive system and the factory style Ford expansion tank will interfere with the March bracket system. What are you guys running for coolant recovery / expansion tanks? Canton Racing Tanks? |

I mounted an expansion tank that has a pressure cap on the front side of the water pump. I did this when I had the SOHC engine in my car but it still works great on a standard SBF. Makes it easy to fill and check the coolant level, oh and looks great as well. The mount is just a piece of SS sheet that goes down to 2 or 3 water pump bolts and has a simple brace back to an intake manifold bolt. I do also have an overflow tank so it catches any coolant that gets spit out of expansion tank.
http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/pict...ictureid=18146 I seem to recall that I bought the expansion tank from Forte when they were selling a lot of FFR related parts. That was many years ago so I don't know if they still sell this style tank. |
I got one from a 1965 Mustang. It has worked flawlessly for years . Pretty inexpensive as well

Here is my setup. I picked up the expansion tank from Superformance. I am running a March pulley set but with the lower alternator mount.
