Hi,
I decided to install a front grill. My 1st cobra had a rock crunch the rad and it leaked badly. So this aluminum mesh is what I came up with.
Is it fitting for a cobra?

If I had kept mine for another summer I was looking for a way to do something similar, but I was trying to fit it back closer to the radiator. As it was I had quite a few rock dings in the fins that I tried to work out using combs and picks. In the end an electrolysis leak got the radiator before the rock dings did and then I sold it.

Looks good HighPlains , my only concern would be cooling has it had an effect on it?

Mr Drifter and his Cobra reside in CHILLIwack, B C.

I'd had a similar expanded metal screen on my first Cobra. Kinda-sorta liked it but on my current car, I found a flexible screen made out of Nomex, from Speedway. Its cutable with shears and I think was only about $25. I mounted it against the front of the radiator using HD Velcro strips. I sprayed it with "aluminum" color paint to look more like the radiator. It does a good job and I can easily remove it to spray out the accumulated bugs. My running temperature did increase 5° but I can live with that. My 2¢ worth.

The guy I bought my SPF from put a mesh grille just in front of the radiator.

He put a lot of highway miles on the car, so I assume the mesh is there for a reason :D

I'm also using the Nomex honeycomb tight against the radiator from Speedway. Painted mine black so that it disappears in the "void". The photo does not show the Nomex clearly, but that is the idea!
No temperature issues...

What weight did you use, 1.8lb/cu ft or 3.0lb/cu ft?

If you install something on the radiator itself, you need to space it out a little bit. There needs to be an air gap there. Otherwise, when it takes a hit from FOD, it will transfer the energy directly to the radiator core. An air gap allows the cover to flex a bit and absorb the energy.

Karl Bebout 06-13-2019 08:21 AM

My Nomex is flexible and +-1/4" thick so I'm counting on it's "crush" to absorb at least moderate FODs. So far, so good. Besides the added protection, I like the ease of cleaning the bugs and debris out of it.

LOMDEL, how did you mount your Nomex?

Alfa02 06-13-2019 10:06 AM

Your car Perry, you like it. Then I like it. I will install the same screen Karl use's, I'm not copying yours Karl, I'm sure I thought of it years before you did :) (Just like.) Yeah, yeah, my wife Morgan Fairchild, yeah that it. ;) Cheers Tommyrot.

Cobra

Hi Tom,
Did you get your cobra back? How did it turn out?
Perry;)

Alfa02 06-13-2019 10:26 AM

It's almost like a broken record, The final stage was to start on June 1, well loooong story short, the 40 ford "From Hell" is still in Rob's shop, I will be headed over tomorrow to help Rob, and finish up the Damn Thing. Then Monday we start in on my car. I'm missing some of the season already, but out of my hands still. We have a very cool car show here in Port Townsend on Sat. (Kinda of a mini Pebble Beach) and again I'll be taking the V-8 Rx-7 instead of the Cobra, I have 6-7 Roadster & 2-Daytona Coupes coming, and Tommy with the 7. Poor Me ;) Cheers

Simple Window Screen

You can have them made at any screen door/window outfit. It has two extra ribs to stiffen it up. Mine is simply double sided taped to the radiator with heavy duty outdoors 3M stuff.

Works great and sits about 1/2" in front of the rad.

I measured and cut it exactly to size for a snug fit and just stuffed it in the radiator surround. It fits tightly and has never fallen out or came loose even about 4000km’s later...
The one I ordered : https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Nomex...-22,29432.html

Nothing wrong with your own design. If it was me, I would've painted it black so that it tend to "disappear".
