Firewall Modification
DV, Pete at Classic said that you do some modifications to the firewall and inner fender well to help with header clearance. Do you have any pictures that you could post or e mail?? Appreciate any help.
Thanks, Wade |
I need to go for a drive. When I saw the title I was thinking computer networking systems.

Wade,
May I surmise you are running a BB? We've never had a problem with the small blocks. I don't have pictures sorry. Let me assume you have a BB. Also let me assume the #1 header tube has -0- tolerance to the wheel well. Oh I'm easy, so here's what we do to fix the problem. Motor in, body on, headers bolted up with just a couple of bolts. Let me see if I can explain our procedure. Eyeball or by using a marker, make a couple of parallel lines where the header is closest to the tub. Pull the headers back off. Now get yourself a pipe or a spray can with a little bit larger diameter than the header tube. I've used the wifes hairspray cans, brake fluid cleaner cans, even a Raid Bug killer can. Place the can over the marks you made. Re-mark the width of the can and cut out. You will be able to see where to start and end the cut by gauging the clearance you need for your headers. When you cut this slot out you only want it just wide enough so that about half of the diameter of the can will fit through the tub. Hard parts over. Wrap the can in a couple of layers of saran wrap, keep as smooth as possible. From the engine side tape the can in place using a lot of duct tape so it wont move. Assuming you have prepped the wheel side of the tub, lay 4 or 5 layers of mat over the spray can from the inside, let it cure, pull off the can, refinish the fender ..bingo.. professional made header clearance! Test in ten! :) Any questions let me know! DV Mikiec... talk about Duh! I just went back and saw Mikes registration..I "assume" a 429 is a BB! |
Thanks DV! Looks like it should be a pretty straight forward fix.
