Alternator question? fo Dscott or DV
Hey Guys
What alternator do you guys recomend running. The wiring is set up for an old style ford, with an external voltage regulator. I would like to try and stay away from this setup. I would like to use ethier a one wire, or a new style ford with an internal regulator. Could you guys please give me your opinion, and what modifications would need to be made to the wiring harness. Thanking you in advance. |
Fella,
I like the single wire myself. No mods really, just chop the the extra wire out of the harness. Tom, owner of Mr. Alternator has a great set up, with full instructions to make it even easier. He's also a sponsor of the Fling! www.mralternator.com DV -- 300 Cobras is NOT enough, and by golly we're going to make it! |

Some of my not-so-fond memories of old Fords are changing starters, alternators, and regulators at most inopportune times. Used a Powermaster starter from Summit which has no Ford parts in it. And used a Delco 3 wire alternator. One wire to the battery, one wire to the ignition (through a diode), and one short wire from the charge out to the winding plug. With Delcos, as long as you're not overheating it trying to charge a defective battery, it'll last 100,000 miles.

Just checked out mralternator website. Looks like quality hardware, and good prices. The 130 amp Ford 3G would work well.

Just imported a chrome 100 amp delco style unit from custom chrome. Cheapest I could find from the States. Added bonus was that it is a one wire unit but includes the contacts to 2 or 3 wire keeping your idiot ilght if you wish. The chrome finish is impeccable. Visit them at www.customchrome.com if you are interested.
All the best to you guys over there. Mike. :) :) |
