Lokar Auto Shifter Question

DV or Don,
Somewhere I read that one of you have used a Lokar Automatic Transmission shifter bolted up to the tail section of the transmission for C-4 and C-6's. I think you said you used a 16" shifter arm but I am having trouble finding that posting. Which Lokar kit did you use and any tips on installation? Thanks in advance guys. Chuck

I use the Lokar with the 6" shifter. There are 2 types available. Either one will work. One mounts to the front of the trans, the other to the rear. You will need to mount the shifter over the tailshaft. If you buy the standard shifter they supply all the mounts but you need to adapt them to the tailshaft which is pretty simple. The tailshaft mounted shifter they sell should work without any mods but I'm not positive. I have an engine and C4 trans I'm putting together right now so I'll let you know how the tailshaft shifter works.

Thanks Don,
I knew one of you guys would have the answer. I'll be ordering one this weekend and I'll let you know how I did. When that's done, it time to worry about getting the drive shaft built then send the body for paint. What a summer project! Between the heat and the fires which sent smoke our way, working in a hot garage has been an experience. I have alot of respect for those of you who do this for a living. Thanks again, Chuck

I don't like locar shifters too much. Several of my customers have them on their street rods, they lack good detents to avoid the 1-3 upshift. More for show than go.

Used a Locar e-brake. Broken and replaced once already. Shifters don't appear very strong.

Cobra builders are always changing something out. So, tell us how your Lokar shifter works out. We'll still be here if it doesn't live up to your expectations.

I installed the Lokar 6" on my C4. I haven't got to test it out yet, (still putting in wiring harness) but it Installed VERY easily, and looks 100X better than any other auto shifter. Unless you look closely, you can't tell it's an auto shifter... looks like a stck shift, that is one reason I got it. If you are drag racing your car, you might go with something you can slam around, but for my purpose ( Show and Cruising) it's AWESOME!

CS,
Glad Don jumped in here. We have just finished our first Auto. tranny in years. Using a "Cheetah" shifter I believe. We do use a lot of Lokars in our streetrods though and have never had the first complaint. But, most of those guys don't slam gears either.

Keep us posted fella.

Don,
Is the 6" shifter handle tall enough? I was measuring from my transmission shaft to the transmission tunnel and 6" seemed pretty short? How much shaft sits above the transsmission handle? Thanks, Chuck

It does come through a little short probably about 4 inches. But the next size up is 12" and it is too high. Still looks nice in the car.

Lokar shifter on C6

dscott - are you sure the next size up is a 12" shifter. On Lokar's site, they list a 6,8,10,12,16 and 23 inch shifter for the C6. I myself used a 10" shifter, but it was a while ago ('940 that I bought it.

cs69er - You can see a picture of the 10" shifter on my member's gallery (a shot of the cockpit of my car). I bought the front mount shifter (I didn't know they made a rear mount one) and adapted it to mount on the tailstock.

Hope this helps.

Lokar Shifter

I just clicked on my own picture gallery and got " the most recent" and "the most popular" galleries coming up, not my own so I 'm not sure that part of the form is working. I will try to get a picture to come up in this post.

I just went out to the garage and measured. The shifter sticks up slightly less than 8".

You may be right on the shifter length. I know when I bought my first one years ago they only had the 6" and 12" along with the real long ones. If they have an 8" that will work the best. The 6" still works but the extra 2" would probably make it look better.
