Intake question!
What is the preffered intake to use and, fits under the hood of the Classic Roadsters Cobra. If you'd like to use a Cobra oval air cleaner. I'm using a 302 HO.

The intake isn't as big a concern on the 302 it's the placement of the oval air cleaner. All the ones I've used had to be cut and pasted. The base off the air cleaner needed to be offset to fit under the hood scoop. If you use the smaller oval type they will fit. It's just the fullsize ones I have to change. I normally run a manifold like the Edelbrock Performer RPM on the 302's. If you use the dropped mounts you may even get by with a taller one.

Hey Don! Never thought that the oval air cleaner wouldn't fit. Go figure! When you say dropped mounts ...hmmm what do you mean? Would you happen to have a papper jig drawing for the oval air cleaner base? That you could send me...so i could modify my air cleaner base.

The newer mounts from Classic use the Mustang GT isolators. It drops the engine by 3/4" which gives a little more hood clearance. If you are using the older style mounts from Ford you would need to buy new frame mounts and isolators. The air cleaner may fit under the hood with the lower mounts. I don't have a template for the air cleaner. I just modify it as needed.

hood clearance problem
I need advice on a hood clearance problem. I have a 351w with the RPM Performer intake and the cobra oval air cleaner. I am using the Napa mounts recommended. What can be done to get the extra clearance I need?

Is the clearance problem between the hood and air clearner or the opening in the hood?

I had the same clearance problem with the new mounts, the long Cobra oval cleaner and a Performer RPM manifold. My clearance problem was at the front of the air cleaner since it protruded farther than the hood scoop towards the front of the car....I had plenty of room towards the firewall. I took the base of the air cleaner which has a one inch or larger ring that raises it up off the carb and shaved the front edge tapering the cut at an angle towards the rear of the cleaner. This tipped the front of the cleaner down over an inch in the front giving me the clearance that I needed and yet still left plenty of clearance in the rear. The same thing worked on Weiand Stealth manifold...( almost the same as the performer RPM).

Yes,thats the same problem I have.Thanks for the input. I'll take another look at it when I get home today. On vacation next week in upstate New York (cobra withdrawal). Hope the bass are biting!

Clearance
Just curious, no one made any mention of whether or not your using a carb spacer. I'm building an A&C Kit and I am using a 351W with an Edelbrock Performer RPM and a Road Demon carb. I am using a one inch carb spacer and A&C advised that their kit has a larger hood scoop that should present no clearance problem.
I will find out for certain today as my body is being delivered today. |
Good idea Bill! I have cut the base and rewelded it off center to move the air cleaner back. If lowering doesn't work then that may be the only choice.

Tony....No spacer is used. Neither of those manifolds seems to require one as they are high rise manifolds and have excellent operating ranges to begin with. If you do need the spacer you can remove the ring I shaved completely and with a unibit drill a hole front and rear where the float adjustments are on the Demon to allow them to come up through the baseplate of the air cleaner. It will then lay right on top of the carb giving you another 1 inch or so. I did this the first time and later replaced the ring to give me what I now have. A lot is dependant on what distributor you're running too. An MSD doesn't allow much room since it's taller than the stock distributor.
Thanks Don....Doing special effects for the film industry always seems to present us with little problems that need to be solved with the quickest most simple way possible....like making that Dodge Charger in the "Fast and Furious" do a 3 foot wheely for 100 yds at only 30 mph or in the newly released "Swat", stuffing a 351W into a Lear Jet and hydraulically chain driving the main landing gear so that we could drive it down Los Angeles downtown city streets at 55mph....( what a rush, by the way!):D |
