Rear Shocks for CR
I ordered and recieved a pair of Performance Engineering drag shocks from Jegs. However I ordered the wrong shocks. I ordered shocks for a 79 - 93 Mustang. I just assumed that was what was needed. WRONG! So, can you tell me which ones I should get. My car uses rear shocks with a loop at top and bottom. I have generic Monroe shocks on there now, but they compress too easily. I want a 50/50 shock or at lears 40/60.

Ed,
Have you spoken with Don about coil overs? I plan on ordering a set from him in late October. I think Pete has recently converted over to them and might have an install pictorial on his website buildup. Bob Bob |
I sent or posted some pics to somebody on the coil-overs I purchase from Don Scott.... slick setup.... anyway if you want to see them or can't find them let me know and I will either email them to you or go out tonight and take a new one.

Mr. Toad!
I'd love to have pictures of that setup, if you care to send them my way - jwinkler@texas.net They also might be good for the CRII website - this forum has the potential to build the best builder FAQ out there! Thanks, JLW PS - Does anyone know if Brent archives the messages that are no longer available on the site? I got some outstanding help on my engine build, but that thread is no longer available online. |
If you're using the stock CR rear suspension, here's what I'm using. Springs are Moog load leveler replacements for Chevette, and I think the only replacements left available. Take them out of the box, and place them in the chassis. They fit, and work.
For shocks, I cross referenced the Monroe or VW part # in the manual to an equivalent Koni. They're still in the car and work fine. If interested, I'll climb under car and get the part # off the shock for you. |
Yup, I've got the rear coil overs from Don and yup, pictures on my site. Not that you need any pictures. The whole installation (including consumption of a couple of chilled adult beverages) should take all of 30 minutes. Bolts right in!

Petek,
How do you like the way the car handles and feels with the rear coilovers? Worth converting? |
Jack,
Can't speak for Petek, but It's day and night in my humble opinion! DV...Nice to be home again! |
Hey Don,
The car is running great after the new release bearing. Passed smog and my Dad got his ride last week! What do a set of Rear Coilovers run? Mike |
Difference? To quote DV, "night and day". The rear end was way too soft before, would bottom out easily, felt mushy. Now the rear stays planted!
Next on my list are coil-overs for up front! |
Mike, that's great news. The engine actually passed smog! That's pretty good for a 40 year old engine. I'm happy your Dad was able to get a ride. Dad's are gone before you know it and the memories made now are all that you have later. My Dad loved the Cobra but was always afraid to drive one. I took him on some pretty wild rides though.
The coilovers for the rear will cost $400 for the complete package. Don |
Thanks Don.
I'll call you later to order them and a few other items |
Pete -
Checked out your rear coil-over pictures, and I've got a question. You noted that with the original setup, with 295/50s and 6" backspacing on your rims, that you were very tight on space - did that get better with the coil-overs? Does the coil-over go in place of the shock, and the old spring just goes away?
Also, was there a reason you went with 6" backspacing? Looking at my car (with (shudder) drums and an 8.8" rear), it looks like you could go outboard more than 4", although probably not more than 5". Mr. Toad - thanks for your pics as well - speaking of drums in the rear, can you tell me if your (very nice looking) wilwood setup changed the rear track? Thanks, JLW |
JLW,
The coil overs didn't make any difference with the clearance with the wheels. The tight clearance is with the bolts that hold the thick metal weldments that hold the latch plates in place. I went with the 6" backspacing because that is what somebody told me I would need. If I had to do it over again I think I'd go with 5 3/4" backspacing ... or measure everything and use the measurements! :) |
Hey J.T.
I would appreciate any pics you have of your rear coil overs. I'll be adding mine very soon and some bread crumbs always help the process. Thanks, Mike |
