California

I need to find a completed CR in CA... anybody out there?
I need to visually inspect for comparison for my build, things seem just too awry

GeorgiaSnake 10-22-2003 05:17 PM

Toad, I'm following you %/ don't slip up :D

CA's a big place!!! What city or area?:)

J. T. Toad 10-22-2003 06:25 PM

I am in the Central Valley, but I frequent the entire state, or at least have the option to, although I don't get up North of Sacramento very often. I have an email into Don Scott, but I can't believe there isn't a complete CR running around in CA Sac south to the border.

Jack21 10-22-2003 07:44 PM

Hey, Mr. Toad, why don't you express your concerns here as well.

Even if you find a completed, running CR where you live, that's not to say it will resolve your issues or concerns. Why? The factory assembly manual, and in particular the parts shopping guide is not the best way to shop for, and build a CR Cobra.

I (we) shudder to think of the "Done by the book" CR's using donor (junkyard) MII suspensions, brakes, steering, cut up springs, Monroe shocks, Chevette steering columns, early '70's vintage electrics and ignitions, etc. (Etc., etc., etc.)

There are simply better ways to do this today that result in a much better, more drivable, and well balanced car.

Start here, not there, and don't spend a dime on parts 'till you check in here first. Seriously!

petek 10-22-2003 08:26 PM

JT,

What do you need to see? I've got a digital camera and can snap a shot or two or three of my CR for you. (Just don't bug me about the dirt on my car ... I'm using it as a daily driver. Can't get the grin off of my face either!)

J. T. Toad 10-22-2003 08:58 PM

daily driver... YOU DOG!!! (hee hee):3DSMILE: (green with envy)

well, my problem is my side pipes and headers... I went back and forth with which side is correct ( can't understand why these aren't marked with port and starboard, 'right' and 'left' do not work with this kit) for engine mounts and headers with conversations with Don and DV, who are always so helpful and generous with their time. I ended up with a best fit scenario with the pipes and engine, albeit the pipes came up short, very similar to your website, but yet usable and straight with plenty of engine clearances... well I put the body on and all hell has broken loose for fit. I presently have my engine mounts as DV suggested, and mounted the 'other' way the Alternator could contact the upper control arm/mount (it doesn't actually hit it, but if the engine were to 'torque' at all... I hope you understand what I am getting at)

Anyway, I am just at a loss of figuring out this poor fit, as it does not make sense to me as I know this should not be brain surgery, which is why I am hoping to get the opportunity to investigate around someone's car to see where I should be heading.

who knew I would end up with the ONLY SB which won't fit in a Cobra

pics which could be helpful, or measurements
1) drivers side intake man. distance to firewall
2) pic of passenger side distance to pass. control arm
3) distance of header flange to frame cross member
4) measurement of RNP crossmember to bock

Jack21,
yes you are right, I can't help but think part of the problem is the manual of which you speak. I do appreciate what you are saying as nearly all my purchases thus far has been gleamed of off information I have obtained in this forum.

The issue I am trying to be careful of is that I do not want my comments to be used against the new owners of Classic Roadsters, as I know that MANY of the problems which I have and am facing is do to the fact I purchased my kit at the end of the last dictatorship.

I'm in Vegas if you would like to come. Probably about 300 miles. Most people enjoy coming here. :) Keeps my property taxes low.

Your in luck, I live in Yorba Linda (close to Disneyland) and will be at Willow springs this weekend if you are interested in coming by. Just look for license # SNKBYTN.

Hi,
I live in Redwood Shores, between Foster City and San Carlos. Highway 92 (San Mateo Bridge) and 101, same exit as the San Carlos Airport. I'll be having the car up in the air in about a month updating the suspension and rebuilding the trans (pops out of 3rd gear). Your more than welcome to come on over and check it out, or if it's running, go out for a ride. Let me know if you want my number and we'll set something up.

JT, don't be concered about upsetting the cart. If there are problems I would definitely like to hear about them. We have gone through the header and mount problem in the past. What we found is generally the headers were wrong. We had new jigs made for proper fit (this was about 3 years ago). With the old mounts it was very easy to put them in wrong so we went to a new design to lower the engine and use the same newer style mount on both sides. The frame mounts should have a mark on them for right (R) and left(L). I can't recall ever having a problem with the sidepipes other than the headers and mounts causing them to mount improper. I hate to say but I hope you didn't get a set of the old headers that were causing problems. I'm going to install a set of sidepipes on a car today to check them out for fitment. I sent you an e-mail.
Don

Hi Don,
I'm getting closer to calling you and ordering those coil overs.
Bob Faust

Jack21 10-23-2003 07:10 PM

Please don't let it be a concern that you might offend the new owners of CRII. The reason there are new owners is the frustration Don Scott, and DV have shared as professional builders of CR products working with or around issues as you describe for a lotta years.

These guys will do it right.

JT, I have the fix for the header and sidepipe problem. This is a real pain for all of us.

The sidepipe welding jig that I received from Classic is wrong. The good news is that all 20 sets of pipes I have can be fixed. The bad news is that I need yours back. I will have them fixed and sent to Jet-Hot. If you still have the Jet-Hot box I can have them picked up using my UPS account and a call tag.

I should have known better to trust anything I received from them but I thought they were right. I know you have been racking your brain trying to see what was wrong. I apologize for the trouble and I'm going to have Finish-Line send you something special. I only know of 1 other set that has been sent out that is a problem. If anyone else has a problem please give me a call so I can take care of it.
Don
