I am trying to figure out what parts i need to purchase that do not come with the kit. If anyone has a parts list or knows what i need to buy to complete the kit aside from what i recieved from C.R Please let me know

Saleen,
I have the build manual that I got in 1996, but I think they have changed quite a bit in later years. Contact Double Venom who is a member of this club as he builds them. His business is Classics by Elite and he is in Loundon, Ohio I think it is but you can contact him through the club. Ron |
This is the subject of many discussions! CR did produce a parts shopping guide way back when, was obsolete when it was published, and had as its only socially redeming factor, part numbers that could be used for cross referencing.
The smartest, and most cost effective thing you can do is not spend a dime on components until you lay out what you want to do here first. And, apparently you're doing just that. Perhaps the best current sources are Don (Now, owner of CRII who has been building them for years), and DV (who also has been building them for years, has custom engineered, and now sells some of the more popular upgrades). I, and a few others may chime in to suggest other options. I think all will agree, however, that one does not build a $40k+ sports car, that looks and drives like a $40k+ sports car with salvage yard parts. |
Jack is absolutely correct. In looking throgh my old manual I had crossed out about 2/3rds of their suggestions for salvage parts and just taken the numbers that I got and went to Ford and ordered everything new. I didn't want anything used or from a junk yard in the car as I was going to drive it hard and I used their parts list as a guide to what I needed to order. At that time they actually had some of the Ford parts you could order from them also. But now that Don and D.V. are handling them they are a thousand times better than mine.

Hey Ron,
Who made your Rollbar for you? |
McCobra,
I wanted something different so I sit down and kind of figured out the rollbar myself. I didn't have any way to bend it and we finally found an outfit here that had a mandrell bender. Emerson uses those on all of his Cobras now, but I don't know who he gets to do the bending. You can contact him as he is a member of the club or through the website at www.XLCobra.com Ron :) |
Ron,
Thanks for the info. Is your's a Classic or an Emerson? What did you mount the bar to? Thanks, Mike |
New Parts
I only want to use new parts on the car i just need to know what comes with the kit and a parts list for what other parts i need to buy
|
OK, I'll start, but help me out guys. This is going to be a long thread.
Saleen, first a few questions. Let's say you're sitting at your Cobra dealership going through the options list. It's staggering. Your first question is, what questions should I be asking. Your first question is, how do I intend to drive the car, (hot street sportscar, some track or drag raing, mostly racing)and what aspect of the car is most important to me (originality, bragging rights, never loosing a race, practicality for daily use, comfortable enough to commute or take trips in?) What you think you want, and what you really want could be two different things. What have you owned/driven in sportscars or musclecars or street rods in the past? What did you like or dislike about each one? Why are you here looking at Cobras? Not trying to play ametuer shrink here, but your answers will determine how your car gets built, and your ultimate satisfaction with it. Admittedly, some of this is chug & plug. What fits/works, and where do I get it. What is my priority of assembly? But it gets personal really quickly when we get into engine, trans, diff, suspension, brakes, interior, accessories. |
My New Kit
I should be getting the kit at then end of this month. The car will be a street car but i want it to have balls. 460 maybe?? I want a mean car. I just need to know in addition to the kit what parts i need to purchase that are not included in the kit
